Sendy Audio Just Dropped a $1,499 DAC/Amp — And It’s Going All-In on Class A

Sendy Audio has launched the Kylin, a $1,499 desktop DAC and headphone amp designed to sit at the center of a serious headphone listening setup.

Sendy Audio has officially launched the Kylin, a desktop DAC/headphone amp that first showed up at CanJam NYC 2025 and is now arriving as a full retail release. Priced at $1,499 / £1,499, it steps into a very crowded part of the personal audio market, where buyers already have plenty of all-in-one desktop options to choose from.

What makes the Kylin stand out on paper is its focus on a Class A amplifier stage paired with high-resolution digital decoding. That does not automatically make it better than the competition, but it does tell you what kind of listener Sendy seems to be targeting here: someone who wants a more traditional hi-fi style desktop component instead of a feature-heavy, app-driven gadget.

If you are new to this category, a DAC/headphone amp like the Kylin is designed to handle two jobs in one box. The DAC, or digital-to-analog converter, takes the digital audio signal from your computer or compatible source and turns it into something your headphones can actually play. The amplifier section then provides the power needed to drive those headphones properly. Put the two together, and you get a cleaner, more desktop-friendly setup than relying on the weak headphone output from a laptop or generic audio interface.

At the digital end, the Kylin uses an XMOS USB audio platform along with an ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chip. That combination is fairly familiar in the headphone world and is often used in gear aimed at high-resolution playback. Sendy says the Kylin supports native DSD512, which matters most for listeners with compatible high-res music files and playback software. For many people, that spec will be more about future-proofing than daily use, but it still places the Kylin firmly in the premium camp.

The amplifier side is where Sendy is making its biggest pitch. The Kylin uses a dedicated Class A output stage built around matched Hitachi transistors, along with dual Burr-Brown OPA604 op-amps and capacitors from WIMA and Nichicon. That is a parts list meant to signal a more serious analog design rather than a basic all-in-one desktop box.

So what does “Class A” actually mean for you? In simple terms, Class A amplification is often associated with smooth, consistent power delivery, but it also tends to run hotter and be less efficient than some other amp designs. That is one reason the Kylin is housed in a machined aluminum chassis. The metal body is not just for looks; it also helps with heat dissipation, which matters more when you are dealing with Class A circuitry.

On the front panel, the Kylin gives you three headphone connection options: 4-pin XLR balanced, 4.4mm balanced, and 6.35mm single-ended. That should cover most wired headphones people are likely to pair with a desktop unit in this price range. Sendy also says the amp automatically adjusts its output based on headphone impedance, and there is a selectable gain function to help match different headphone types and source levels.

That part matters because not all headphones behave the same way. Some need more power to come alive, while others can be overly sensitive and harder to fine-tune at low volume. The Kylin’s gain switch and ALPS volume control are meant to give you a little more flexibility there, especially if you rotate between different headphones instead of sticking with just one pair.

The company is also positioning the Kylin as more than a headphone-only device. Sendy says it includes both digital and analog inputs and outputs, which means it could fit into a wider desktop or hi-fi system instead of living as a completely isolated box. A servo-regulated power supply is also part of the design, with the goal of keeping unwanted electrical noise under control.

In terms of styling, the Kylin looks more classic hi-fi than flashy desktop tech. That may actually work in its favor. A lot of buyers in this space still want equipment that feels like serious audio gear, not something that looks halfway between a gaming accessory and office hardware.

The Sendy Audio Kylin is not arriving in an empty category. At $1,499, it lands between products like the FiiO K17, currently listed at $989 on Amazon, and the Rotel DX-3, which sells for $1,699 at Crutchfield.

The FiiO looks like the more value-focused option, with a feature-heavy design and a lower price that could make it appealing to buyers who want plenty of functionality without stepping all the way into premium pricing. The Rotel, on the other hand, leans more toward the traditional hi-fi crowd, with DAC, headphone amp, and preamp duties in one compact box.

That puts the Kylin in an interesting middle ground. Based on Sendy’s pitch, it seems less focused on packing in extras and more interested in offering a Class A desktop DAC/amp aimed squarely at headphone listeners. So while the FiiO may win on value and the Rotel may make more sense in a broader hi-fi system, the Kylin looks like the one trying to appeal to buyers who want a more headphone-centric, old-school desktop listening setup.

The bigger question, of course, is how it performs in real listening. Strong specs and premium components can make a product interesting, but they do not guarantee that it will rise above the many capable DAC/amps already on the market. Still, the Kylin looks like a deliberate move from Sendy Audio to expand beyond headphones and into desktop electronics with a more upscale, analog-minded approach.

That is especially interesting given that we reviewed the Sendy Audio Egret last month and gave those headphones our Editor’s Choice award. The Kylin appears to be part of a larger push to give Sendy buyers a more complete listening chain, not just another standalone headphone release.

The Sendy Audio Kylin is available now through selected retailers worldwide for $1,499 / £1,499.
