Sony is adding something a little different to its INZONE lineup, and it’s not the usual closed-back, all-in-one gaming headset. The new INZONE H6 Air is a wired, open-back headset that leans more toward comfort and spacious sound than isolation or all-out competitive focus. It comes in at $199.99, weighs just 199 grams, and pulls in some design inspiration from Sony’s MDR-MV1 ($419.99) studio headphones.
That alone makes it stand out. Most gaming headsets in this price range are built to block out the world around you and sharpen directional cues for competitive play. The H6 Air goes in the opposite direction. Its open-back design lets air and sound move freely through the earcups, which usually creates a wider, more natural sound, but that also means you’ll hear what’s happening around you, and others might hear your game.
So right away, this isn’t a one-size-fits-all headset. It’s clearly aimed at a specific type of setup and player.

What is Sony trying to do here? Well, instead of focusing purely on competitive gaming, Sony is leaning into immersion. The H6 Air supports 360 Spatial Sound for Gaming and includes a custom “RPG/Adventure” EQ mode, which Sony says was tuned with input from PlayStation Studios sound designers.
That gives you a pretty clear idea of the goal. This headset is built more for story-driven games, open-world exploration, and cinematic experiences like Horizon Forbidden West or Red Dead Redemption 2, where atmosphere and sound design matter just as much as hearing footsteps in the distance.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the key features:
On paper, it’s a fairly straightforward setup. No wireless, no active noise canceling, no battery to worry about. Just a wired headset with a focus on sound and comfort.

Sony already has more traditional gaming headsets like the H5 ($179.99) and H9 II ($349.99), which cover the usual expectations like closed-back designs, wireless options, and better isolation.
The H6 Air sits in a different lane. It’s closer to a pair of open-back headphones with a built-in mic than a typical gaming headset. That could make it appealing if you’ve ever felt like most gaming headsets sound a bit too boxed-in or heavy during long sessions.
It also helps that it’s light. At under 200 grams, this is one of those headsets you can wear for hours without really thinking about it, especially since open-back designs tend to run cooler than closed ones.

Sony includes a detachable cardioid boom mic, designed to focus on your voice and cut down on background noise. That said, open-back headsets come with some built-in limitations.
Because they don’t isolate sound, they work best in quieter environments. If you’re gaming in a busy household, shared space, or anywhere with constant noise, you’ll probably run into issues—both in what you hear and what your mic picks up.
In a quiet room, though, it’s a much better fit.

The H6 Air is mainly aimed at PC users, especially since features like EQ customization and spatial audio run through Sony’s INZONE Hub software and the included USB-C Audio Box.
That said, you can still use it with PlayStation 5 or any device with a 3.5mm jack. You just won’t get the full software-driven feature set outside of PC.
Sony also recently updated the INZONE Hub to support the H6 Air, which shows this isn’t a one-off experiment but a part of the current lineup going forward.

Open-back designs always come with a clear set of pros and cons, and the H6 Air is no exception.
What you get:
What you give up:
That tradeoff is really the whole story here. This headset isn’t trying to do everything, it’s trying to do one thing well.
At $199.99, the INZONE H6 Air sits in a competitive space. A lot of gamers at this price point will also look at traditional gaming headsets from brands like SteelSeries, Razer, or Logitech, or even consider pairing open-back headphones with a separate mic.
Sony’s angle is to meet somewhere in the middle. You get the feel and sound of an open-back headphone, but with a gaming-friendly mic and software ecosystem built in.
The INZONE H6 Air won’t make sense for everyone. But for players with a quiet setup who want something lighter, more breathable, and less enclosed than the typical gaming headset, it’s a different kind of option, and that alone makes it worth paying attention to.
The Sony INZONE H6 Air headphones are available now for $199.99 at Amazon and Best Buy.
