The Focal and Naim Audio Acquisition Is Complete — And Home Theater Fans Should Pay Attention

One of the bigger AV industry deals of the year is now official, with Barco officially adding Focal and Naim Audio to its portfolio.

Focal and Naim officially have a new corporate home. VerVent Audio, the company behind both premium audio brands, has confirmed that its acquisition by Barco is now complete, bringing the French and British hi-fi names into the Barco Group portfolio.

The move has been in the works for a while. Back in March, Barco announced plans to acquire VerVent Audio Holding in a deal reportedly worth around €135 million. At the time, the acquisition still needed to clear employee consultation requirements and other closing conditions. Those steps are now finished, making the deal official.

For people outside the AV world, Barco may not be a household name. But chances are you’ve seen its technology before. The Belgian company is heavily involved in professional projection, cinema systems, visualization tech, medical imaging displays, and large-scale immersive environments. Basically, Barco has spent years focused on the “picture” side of entertainment and presentation technology.

Now it’s making a much bigger move into sound.

Instead of building a premium audio business from scratch, Barco is stepping into one that already exists. And it’s not exactly starting small.

Focal and Naim together cover a pretty wide slice of the high-end audio market, including:

  • Loudspeakers and home theater systems
  • Hi-fi amplifiers and streamers
  • Headphones and portable audio gear
  • Studio monitors
  • Custom installation products
  • Automotive and marine audio systems

The brands also already have strong retail and distribution networks, along with dedicated fan bases that care deeply about audio gear. That matters in the hi-fi world, where brand identity can sometimes feel almost tribal.

From Barco’s perspective, the strategy seems fairly straightforward: combine its visual technology expertise with established premium audio brands and offer more complete AV solutions.

That could eventually affect areas like:

  • Luxury home theaters
  • High-end media rooms
  • Professional cinema installations
  • Commercial AV spaces
  • Immersive entertainment environments

The bigger picture here is that audio and video companies are increasingly trying to work as one ecosystem instead of separate pieces. A modern home theater setup might include projection, room correction, streaming audio, automation, wireless connectivity, architectural speakers, and networked control systems all working together.

Companies clearly see value in owning more of that experience directly.

Whenever a well-known audio company gets acquired, enthusiasts immediately start wondering whether products, design philosophy, or overall direction will change. For now, VerVent is trying to calm those concerns.

In its announcement, the company described the acquisition as a move focused on continuity, stability, and long-term strategy. VerVent says joining Barco strengthens its existing foundation while creating new opportunities through Barco’s industrial and technological resources.

CEO Cédrick Boutonet said the company is entering this next phase “with clarity” and emphasized that the goal is to reinforce VerVent’s strategy while staying true to what makes Focal and Naim unique.

“We are entering this new phase with clarity, determination, and an unwavering commitment to building sustainable, shared growth. Joining Barco allows us to reinforce our strategy while staying true to what makes us unique.” said Boutonet.

That last part is probably the key takeaway for long-time customers. Focal has built much of its identity around French speaker engineering and driver design, while Naim has spent decades developing a very recognizable approach to hi-fi electronics and streaming systems. People who buy these products tend to notice even small changes in philosophy, so maintaining those identities will likely matter quite a bit moving forward. At least publicly, neither Barco nor VerVent is talking about major shakeups.

The more interesting question is what this partnership eventually leads to. Barco already has deep experience in projection and visualization technology. Focal brings speaker design across home, studio, automotive, and custom installation categories. Naim adds streaming platforms, amplification, and connected audio systems.

That combination opens the door to a few possibilities:

  • More integrated premium home theater packages
  • Better coordination between video and sound systems
  • Expanded luxury custom installation offerings
  • New connected or active audio products
  • Stronger immersive entertainment experiences

That doesn’t mean you should expect a “Barco x Naim projector” announcement next week. Big acquisitions usually move slowly, especially in premium AV markets where product cycles can stretch over several years.

Still, the direction is pretty clear. Barco wants a stronger position in entertainment and premium residential AV, and bringing Focal and Naim into the fold gives the company instant credibility in high-end audio.

For now, the companies are positioning this as a long-term partnership rather than a dramatic reset. But it’ll be interesting to see what happens once the integration phase settles down and the engineering teams start working more closely together. Because in today’s AV world, companies increasingly want control over both the screen and the speakers sitting next to it.
