Half-Width No More? Cyrus Surprises Fans With Full-Width 80 Series

For the first time in its 40-year history, Cyrus Audio has stepped beyond its iconic half-width designs with the launch of the 80 Series.

For over 40 years, Cyrus Audio has been one of those brands you recognize instantly, not just for its sound but for its distinctive half-width components. Those compact boxes have been part of the company’s DNA since the 1980s, making Cyrus systems stand out in a world where full-size hi-fi gear often dominates the shelves. But at High End Munich 2025, Cyrus did something it’s never done before: it unveiled the Cyrus 80 Series, its very first lineup of full-width products.

So, what’s the big deal? Well, for fans and newcomers alike, this signals a shift, not a departure from what Cyrus is known for, but an expansion that opens the door to a wider audience. The 80 Series consists of three new models: the 80 AMP streaming amplifier, the 80 PRE preamplifier, and the 80 PWR power amplifier. All three are set to launch in November, with pricing expected to land between £5,000 and £6,000. That puts Cyrus squarely in the competitive world of premium hi-fi, going head-to-head with brands like Naim and Hegel.

Why go full-width? To understand why this matters, it helps to look back at Cyrus’s journey. In 2024, the company launched its 40 Series, calling it a “new beginning” — modern, fresh-looking gear that still clung to the brand’s trademark half-width format. But as Chris Hutcheson, Cyrus’s Head of Marketing, explains, the 80 Series isn’t about leaving that legacy behind.

He said: “We have been and always will be renowned for our half-width product design, but the demands of the consumer are varied, and we recognise that there are some customers who prefer the full-width look and feel. The 40 series was created to reset the Cyrus brand; the 80 series is here to expand our appeal to music fans who have not considered us before purely because of the form factor of our products.”

In short, some customers simply prefer the look and presence of full-width hi-fi gear. The larger chassis also allows the engineers to fit bigger internal components — including the external 40 PSU power supply that, in the past, had to sit outside the box — giving the 80 Series models more breathing room inside. This means more flexibility for both performance and design, without locking out long-time Cyrus fans who still love the compact gear they’ve always known.

Here’s a quick look at what’s included in the new range:

Cyrus 80 AMP

  • 150 watts per channel, Class A/B amplification
  • Built-in BluOS streaming platform
  • Supports Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify
  • Roon Ready
  • Integrated MM/MC phono stage
  • Features a large touchscreen, color display, and illuminated dials

Cyrus 80 PRE

  • Preamplifier with the same BluOS streaming features as the 80 AMP
  • Designed to pair seamlessly with the 80 PWR power amp

Cyrus 80 PWR

  • Power amplifier delivering 200 watts per channel (Class A/B)
  • Can be set to mono mode, pushing 300 watts of bridged power

One interesting thing about the 80 Series is that it’s designed to work alongside existing 40 Series products. For example, the 40 Series CD player and phono stage can be mixed into a system with the new amps, letting users create a system that fits both their listening preferences and their space.

Cyrus’s move into the £5,000–£6,000 price range is notable because it steps up the brand’s position in the high-end hi-fi market. While the 40 Series products were priced more in the £3,000–£4,000 bracket, the 80 Series signals a clear intention to compete directly with some of the most respected names in premium British and European audio.

That said, Cyrus isn’t trying to leave its past behind. Instead, it’s offering more choice. If you love the classic half-width style, you’re still covered. But if you’ve been waiting for Cyrus to deliver something bigger, heavier, and more in line with full-width hi-fi aesthetics, the 80 Series might be just the thing.

While Cyrus has been fairly tight-lipped on detailed specs and future plans, Managing Director Nick Clarke hints that the 80 Series is just the beginning of what’s to come. “This latest expansion is far from the end — trust me, there’s still more to come,” Clarke says. It’s a tease, but it suggests the company is looking to build on the momentum generated by the 40 and 80 Series launches.

Attendees at High End Munich 2025 got a first glimpse of the full-width gear, but Cyrus, like many other manufacturers at the show, kept some of the finer details under wraps. For now, the focus is on the fact that Cyrus is growing its lineup, not shifting its identity, but expanding it to meet a wider range of listener needs.

The Cyrus 80 Series marks an interesting new chapter for a brand that’s built its reputation on doing things a little differently. By offering full-width products for the first time, Cyrus is showing it’s willing to adapt and grow while staying connected to the things that made it stand out in the first place.

For music lovers who’ve admired Cyrus from a distance but wanted something with a bigger footprint, the 80 Series offers a new option. And for longtime fans, it’s another piece of the puzzle, a chance to build an even more versatile system.

With a November release on the horizon, we won’t have to wait long to see how these new models perform in real-world setups. Whether you stick with the half-width classics or explore the full-width newcomers, one thing’s clear: Cyrus is ready to offer you a choice.
