Fosi Audio GR70 Review: This Is Why I Still Love Tube Amps

Sometimes I want warmth. I want a little more body through the mids, richer vocals, and that slightly softer tube character that makes music feel different. The GR70 gives me exactly that.

Man, I love tube amps. There’s just something about that warm, slightly richer sound that makes music more enjoyable, even if it isn’t technically the most neutral way to listen. The Fosi Audio GR70 absolutely scratches that itch.

The GR70 is a compact tube headphone amplifier and preamp using a four-tube OTL design. It uses 4x tubes total, and it includes bass and treble controls, low- and high-impedance headphone modes, and an RCA preamp output. More importantly, it actually sounds like a tube amp, and that’s what makes this thing so much fun.

Build Quality

Build quality is fantastic. Fosi has gotten really good at making affordable audio gear that doesn’t feel particularly affordable, and the GR70 continues that trend.

The aluminum chassis feels substantial and well put together, the knobs have a nice feel, and the exposed tubes obviously give the whole thing a completely different personality from a typical solid-state headphone amp. I also like Fosi’s black-and-orange design language here. It’s recognizable without going overboard, and the tubes become the centerpiece once everything is powered up. Quite an affordable price too. It just looks sweet sitting on a desk.

Sound Quality

This is why I like the GR70 so much. There’s a noticeable tube warmth to the presentation that gives music more body and personality. Vocals sound richer, the midrange has a little more fullness, and bass takes on a rounder character without becoming muddy. This isn’t an amplifier that’s trying to disappear completely from the signal chain. It adds some flavor, and that’s exactly why I’m using a tube amp in the first place.

Modern solid-state headphone amps can be incredibly clean and transparent, and there’s obviously nothing wrong with that. But sometimes I don’t want perfectly transparent. I want something warmer and more relaxed that makes me want to sit there and keep listening. The GR70 does that really well.

There’s still plenty of detail, and the treble doesn’t sound overly rolled off or dull. The difference is more about the overall presentation. It sounds smoother, fuller, and a little more forgiving than the typical neutral solid-state amp.

Bass and Treble Controls

The GR70 also gives you physical bass and treble controls, which actually make a lot of sense on a product like this. If I’m already using a tube amp because I want some personality in the sound, having quick tone controls lets me push things a little further depending on the headphones I’m using.

Both controls can be returned to their neutral position easily, so you don’t have to use them at all. But they’re fun to experiment with, particularly when switching between headphones with very different tuning.

Headphone Support

Fosi includes separate low- and high-impedance settings, allowing the GR70 to work with a pretty wide range of headphones. The low setting is intended for roughly 16- to 120-ohm headphones, while the high setting is designed for approximately 120 to 300 ohms.

I especially like this kind of tube amp with headphones that are already fairly neutral or slightly analytical. The added warmth and body can make them considerably more enjoyable for longer listening sessions.

It’s Also a Tube Preamp

One of the best things about the GR70 is that it isn’t limited to headphones. There’s an RCA preamp output on the back, so you can also use the GR70 between a DAC or streamer and a separate power amplifier. That opens up some really fun possibilities. You could pair the GR70 with a clean Class-D power amp such as Fosi’s ZA3 and essentially combine tube character with modern Class-D power. I really like that idea. It also gives the GR70 considerably more usefulness than a headphone-only tube amp.

Connectivity

Connectivity is pretty simple. You get RCA input, 3.5mm and 6.35mm headphone outputs, and RCA preamp output. There’s no built-in DAC, Bluetooth, optical, coaxial, or balanced input. Honestly, I’m fine with that. The GR70 is a tube headphone amp and preamp. Connect whatever DAC or source you already like and let this handle the amplification.

That simplicity is part of the appeal.

Final Thoughts

The Fosi Audio GR70 reminds me why I still love tube amps. Modern solid-state gear can be cleaner, more neutral, and technically more accurate, but that isn’t always what I want when I sit down to enjoy music.

Sometimes I want warmth. I want a little more body through the mids, richer vocals, and that slightly softer tube character that makes music feel different. The GR70 gives me exactly that.

Build quality is fantastic, it looks great sitting on a desk, the physical tone controls are fun to use, and the ability to use it as either a headphone amp or tube preamp gives it a lot more flexibility than I expected.

This thing is just fun. If you already have a clean DAC or solid-state setup and want to experiment with tubes without spending crazy money, the GR70 is an easy way to find out why tube amps still have such a loyal following.
