

Apple may finally be preparing to give its smart-home platform something it has been missing for years: a dedicated touchscreen that stays in the house.
The rumored device is commonly being called the Apple HomePad, although Apple has not announced that name... or the product itself. Recent reporting describes it as a compact smart display designed to control connected devices, handle video calls, show useful information, and put Apple’s new Siri AI within easy reach of everyone in the home.
According to a late-July report based on information from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple could announce the device sometime between October 2026 and early 2027. The schedule apparently remains flexible, so another delay cannot be ruled out.
That uncertainty matters. Almost every major detail about the HomePad still comes from reports rather than Apple, including its name, specifications, price, and launch date. What we have so far, however, paints a fairly clear picture of what Apple appears to be building.
The HomePad is reportedly a square smart display measuring around seven inches. That would make it considerably smaller than a typical iPad but large enough to show smart-home controls, camera feeds, calendars, photos, weather information, and other glanceable content.

Apple is believed to be developing at least two versions:
Both versions could include a camera for video calls, presence detection, and user recognition. The device may automatically change its layout, text size, available apps, or displayed information depending on who is standing in front of it.
That could make the HomePad more practical in a shared household than simply attaching an iPad to the wall. One family member might see personal calendar appointments and reminders, while another could be shown different widgets, music suggestions, or smart-home controls.
The rumored operating system is said to be based on tvOS, with an interface using app icons, widgets, and information panels inspired by iOS and watchOS. Reported apps include Home, Calendar, Photos, Safari, and communication tools, although the final software selection remains unknown.
Apple technically does not need the HomePad to operate a smart home. The HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV can already work as Apple Home hubs.

A home hub allows you to control accessories while away from home, share access with other household members, and run automations based on schedules, locations, or sensor activity. Apple also requires a home hub when adding Matter accessories through the Home app. Some Thread-based Matter devices need a compatible Thread border router, such as a HomePod mini or selected Apple TV 4K models.
The missing piece is a permanent visual interface. At the moment, you normally control an Apple-based smart home through an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, HomePod, or Apple TV. Those devices work, but they are not always in the most convenient place. Your phone may be charging in another room, the television may be off, and voice control is not ideal when you need to browse several cameras or change multiple settings.
A small display in the kitchen, hallway, or living room could provide immediate access to lights, thermostats, locks, blinds, robot vacuums, security systems, and camera feeds.
Apple’s current Home app already groups accessories into areas such as lighting, security, and climate. It can display several camera feeds, control individual rooms, and create automations. The HomePad would presumably bring those existing controls to hardware intended to remain visible and accessible throughout the day.
The screen may attract the most attention, but Siri AI could determine whether the HomePad is genuinely useful or simply another place to view controls you already have on your phone.

Apple introduced its new Siri AI system at WWDC 2026. The updated assistant is designed to support more natural conversations, understand personal context, search across apps, use information shown on a device’s screen, access current information from the web, and perform more actions inside apps.
Bringing those capabilities into the home could make smart-home commands more flexible. Instead of memorizing the exact name assigned to a lamp or scene, you might be able to ask Siri to make the living room more comfortable, show the camera that detected movement, or turn off everything downstairs except the hallway light.
The HomePad may also function as an intercom, communication screen, and shared household assistant. A family could potentially use it to leave messages, check schedules, start FaceTime calls, play music, view photos, or see who is at the front door.
Those are logical uses based on Apple’s existing services and the reported hardware, but Apple has not yet demonstrated how Siri AI will operate on a shared home device. Personal context is straightforward on an iPhone used by one person. It becomes more complicated when several people, and occasionally visitors, stand in front of the same screen.
A camera could make the HomePad much more versatile, particularly for FaceTime, video intercom features, security monitoring, and automatic personalization. It could also make some people uncomfortable placing the device in a bedroom or other private area.

Apple says Home app accessory data is encrypted end-to-end and that supported accessories can be controlled through Apple devices rather than relying entirely on cloud processing.
Still, the HomePad would need clear physical and software controls for its camera and microphones. Users should be able to see when the camera is active, disable recognition features, and decide which personal information can appear on a shared display.
Apple will also need to explain what happens when the device recognizes someone who does not live in the home. A personalized display should not expose private calendar entries, messages, photos, or reminders simply because the wrong person walks past it.
Apple would not be inventing the smart display. Amazon’s Echo Show family and Google’s Nest Hub products have offered touchscreen smart-home controls, media playback, voice assistants, video calling, and camera integration for years.

Google’s seven-inch Nest Hub, for example, can control compatible smart devices and show media or photos, while the larger Nest Hub Max adds a camera for video calls, home monitoring, and personalized information through Face Match.
Apple’s advantage would be integration with devices and services that many households already use. An Apple-focused display could connect the Home app with FaceTime, Apple Music, Photos, Calendar, HomeKit Secure Video, Intercom, and Siri AI without requiring an iPad to remain permanently attached to a stand.
Its main disadvantage may be price. Previous reporting suggested Apple had considered a price of around $350, although the company was reportedly looking for ways to reduce manufacturing costs. That figure is not confirmed and could change before release.
At $350, the HomePad would need to do more than provide basic light switches and weather widgets. Buyers would reasonably expect a good display, capable speakers, reliable voice recognition, useful multi-user support, and enough processing power to remain responsive for several years.
Smart displays often look useful in demonstrations but can become little more than digital clocks once the novelty wears off.
For the HomePad to avoid that fate, Apple needs to focus on everyday tasks rather than filling the screen with apps. Camera alerts should appear quickly. Lights and scenes should respond without delays. Voice commands should work even when you do not remember an accessory’s exact name. Household members should get useful personalization without exposing each other’s private information.
Matter and Thread support will also be important. Apple Home already works with Matter accessories, but compatibility still varies by device type and manufacturer. A dedicated display will not solve every setup or reliability issue on its own.
The HomePad could nevertheless fill a clear gap in Apple’s lineup. HomePod gives you voice control, Apple TV acts as a capable hub, and the Home app provides a central interface, but Apple still lacks a purpose-built screen that ties those pieces together.
Whether that screen arrives in October 2026, sometime in early 2027, or under a completely different name remains unknown. The more important question is whether Apple can make it useful enough that you reach for it instead of the iPhone already in your pocket.
