Astell&Kern Wrapped Its Flagship Music Player in Copper (And It's Not Just for Looks)

Astell&Kern has launched a copper-bodied version of its flagship SP4000 music player, offering the same internals in a dramatically different material.

Astell&Kern has just introduced a new version of its flagship digital audio player—the A&ultima SP4000 Copper. If you’re already familiar with the standard SP4000 that launched last year, this one keeps all the same internals but wraps them in a shiny new material: 99.98% pure copper. It’s a bold design move, and it’s not just for looks. A&K also dropped a new luxury leather storage case alongside it, called the Collector’s Atelier, aimed at folks who like their audio gear organized, and looking good while doing it.

Under the hood, the SP4000 Copper is identical to the original SP4000. It’s got the quad-DAC setup, octa-circuit layout, and support for hi-res PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz, plus DSD512 for the few people with files that demanding. Wireless playback is also covered with aptX Adaptive and LDAC, so you still get 24-bit sound quality even over Bluetooth.

Battery life? Still around 10 hours, depending on how you’re listening.

So what’s the difference? It’s all in the copper chassis. Astell&Kern didn’t just slap on a copper-colored finish. They built the whole exterior from nearly pure copper, which sounds straightforward, until you consider how soft and reactive copper is. That makes manufacturing tricky, so they had to develop a multi-layer stabilization process to protect it from oxidation and scratches. It’s not easy to work with, but the result is a player that feels and looks like something out of a museum.

This isn’t the first time Astell&Kern has released a copper edition of one of its players (there was a similar version of the AK380 nearly a decade ago). But this time around, the company is leaning hard into the idea that copper’s natural properties, especially its electrical conductivity and shielding, have a real impact on how music sounds.

They claim it helps preserve finer sonic details by keeping interference at bay. According to A&K, the copper body gives the player a slightly different sonic character, describing it as having deep bass, a rich midrange, and a more natural treble decay. Whether or not you’ll notice the difference is up to your ears (and maybe your cables), but it’s part of what makes this version special.

The SP4000 Copper is limited edition and available now for $4,499 at B&H Photo. That’s a decent jump from the standard version, which retails for about $3,900. Astell&Kern hasn’t said how many units will be made, but this clearly isn’t meant for everyone. It’s aimed at collectors, design lovers, and maybe audiophiles who like the idea of owning something a little rarer (and heavier).

Launching alongside the player is the Collector’s Atelier, a leather valet case designed to hold your SP4000, your IEMs, and other audio accessories. It’s made with Perlinger leather from a German tannery that’s been around since the 1800s. The leather is processed using a heat-free shrinking technique, which preserves its grain and makes it both soft and durable.

The idea is that it not only protects your gear but also adds to the overall experience of owning something high-end. Price? $260 / £229 / €260, so not cheap, but not entirely out of step with other luxury audio accessories.

It’s worth noting again: the SP4000 Copper doesn’t introduce any new features. The performance, file support, and UI are all exactly the same as the standard SP4000. So if you already own the original model, there’s no need to feel like you’re missing out on a must-have upgrade.

Instead, this version is more about the experience, the feel, the weight, the material, and possibly some subtle shifts in how the sound is presented, depending on how much faith you place in copper as a performance enhancer.

The A&ultima SP4000 Copper is a niche product, no question. It’s for people who want their audio player to be as much a statement piece as it is a source of music. If you’re in the market for a flagship DAP and like the idea of one wrapped in solid copper, this could be your thing.

But if all you care about is the sound and features, the standard SP4000 gets you the same performance for less. Either way, Astell&Kern is keeping things interesting in the world of high-end portable audio and giving fans of beautiful gear something to talk about.
