If you’ve ever squinted at your TV’s subtitles or hit rewind just to catch a mumbled line of dialogue, you’ve probably run into one of the most common complaints about modern TV audio.. And ZVOX thinks it has a fix. The company has just launched the AV835, a compact $269.99 soundbar built to make voices easier to hear—without adding a bunch of extra speakers, wires, or complexity to your setup.

This new model is basically a slimmed-down version of ZVOX’s AV855, designed for smaller spaces like bedrooms, dorms, kitchens, or secondary TVs. It’s not trying to compete with a full Dolby Atmos setup. Instead, it’s designed to give you better sound, especially when it comes to understanding what people on screen are actually saying.

The AV835 leans hard into ZVOX’s specialty: dialogue clarity. At its core are 10 levels of AccuVoice—a feature that uses hearing-aid-style algorithms to lift speech out of background noise. That means less fiddling with the volume during whispery scenes or noisy soundtracks.

On top of that, there are 10 additional levels of SuperVoice, which aim to strip away more of the background sound—things like crowd noise, explosions, or loud music—to keep voices front and center.

If you’ve ever been blasted by a too-loud commercial or had to ride the remote’s volume button through a movie, you’ll probably appreciate the Output Leveling feature too. It works to smooth out those jarring jumps in loudness and make quiet scenes a little easier to follow.

At just over 17 inches wide and under 2 inches tall, the AV835 is built for tight spaces. But that doesn’t mean it sounds thin. Inside are two 2.95-inch woofers for bass and two 1.46-inch front-firing drivers to cover the mids and highs.

To help stretch the sound beyond the bar’s small footprint, ZVOX includes its PhaseCue Virtual Surround tech. It’s not full surround sound, but it does try to simulate a wider soundstage, including a virtual center channel for sharper dialogue. The goal is to make your movie or show feel bigger and more immersive without the need for satellites or subwoofers.

One of the biggest appeals of the AV835 is how little effort it takes to get up and running. You’ve got a few connection options: HDMI ARC, optical, and 3.5mm analog. HDMI ARC is especially handy because it lets your TV remote handle the soundbar’s volume, mute, and power, so you’re not stuck juggling multiple remotes.

The soundbar also comes with its own IR remote, which features large, easy-to-read buttons. There’s a hidden display that lights up briefly to show you the volume level or input, then fades away so it doesn’t distract you during a movie.

And visually, the AV835 is no slouch. The brushed aluminum body and metal grille give it a polished look that fits nicely under most TVs or on a shelf. It won’t hog your entertainment console or call too much attention to itself.

The AV835 isn’t about booming bass, cinematic surround sound, or next-gen gaming audio. It’s about simplicity and usability. If your main frustration is unclear dialogue, inconsistent volume, or underwhelming TV speakers—and you don’t want to deal with soundbar-subwoofer combos or wall-mounted rears—this is the kind of product that might make your evenings more enjoyable.

It’s also a solid option if you’re outfitting a second room where space is tight and budget matters. You’re not paying extra for features you might never use; instead, the AV835 focuses on doing a few things well: boosting dialogue, reducing distractions, and keeping things easy.
