Cambridge Audio has just introduced the Evo 150 SE, a new take on its popular all-in-one streaming amplifier. It’s designed for people who want solid hi-fi sound without the usual rack of gear, and it adds a few new tricks compared to the original Evo 150. If you’re looking to build or simplify a system—maybe with a record player, TV, or some streaming services—this unit is made to be a central hub.
The Evo 150 SE still packs 150 watts per channel, but under the hood is a newer version of the Hypex Class D amplifier module. Cambridge worked directly with Hypex on this, tuning the amp to their own specs. The goal here was to offer a more detailed and dynamic sound while keeping the same compact footprint and energy efficiency that Class D amps are known for.
Streaming is handled by Cambridge Audio’s own StreamMagic platform, now in its fourth generation. It supports a wide range of services—Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Amazon Music, Qobuz, Deezer, Roon, and more—along with internet radio and UPnP. You can stream over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and if you’re more into wireless options, the Evo 150 SE plays nicely with AirPlay 2, Google Cast, and Bluetooth aptX HD.
“Evo 150 has been a very special product for Cambridge, merging true hi-fi sound with lifestyle-friendly aesthetics and convenience in a way that has really resonated with listeners. For this special edition, we’ve pushed the boundaries of what to expect from Class D amplification – an even more musical, emotive listening experience in a design that has been further refined,” explains Matt Dore, Chief Technical Officer of Cambridge Audio.
What makes the Evo 150 SE stand out for many users is its flexibility. On the back, you’ll find HDMI ARC, which means it can double as a TV sound system. There’s a built-in phono stage if you want to plug in a turntable, plus analog RCA and balanced XLR inputs for other gear. For digital sources, you get USB audio, USB media, coaxial, and two optical inputs. There's also a dedicated subwoofer output and preamp outs if you want to expand the system further.
Inside, the digital-to-analog conversion is handled by an ESS Sabre ES9018K2M DAC, which is known for clean, low-noise performance. So whether you're streaming high-res files or listening to a vinyl record, the Evo 150 SE is set up to handle both ends of the audio spectrum.
The front of the unit features a 6.8-inch color screen, which can show off album artwork, a clock, or animated VU meters if you want a bit of retro flair. There’s also a physical remote included, but most people will probably use the StreamMagic app for control—or even the TV remote, thanks to the HDMI ARC integration.
Design-wise, not much has changed in size—it’s still a 12-inch square, roughly the footprint of a vinyl LP. But there are some updates. The control knob has been reworked with a sleeker, more tactile feel, and the unit comes with two sets of magnetic side panels: one in classic wood and the other with a more modern ridged finish. You can swap them out depending on your room or mood.
If you’re still spinning CDs, Cambridge has a companion product called the Evo CD. It’s a dedicated CD transport designed to match the Evo series in both design and function, and it integrates cleanly with the Evo 150 SE if you want to keep your disc collection in the mix.
The Evo 150 SE arrives alongside a refreshed StreamMagic app and other product launches from Cambridge, including a new set of wireless earbuds, the Melomania A100. Altogether, these updates reflect a broader push by the company to make hi-fi audio more accessible and less complicated, whether you’re listening from a phone, turntable, or TV.
