

When Sonos launched its first headphones in 2024, the thing that confused me most wasn’t the sound quality, the price, or even the decision to enter an already crowded premium-headphone market. It was much simpler than that: the Sonos Ace didn’t really behave like a Sonos product.
That sounds strange considering the name on the earcups. The original Ace supported Active Noise Cancellation, lossless audio, Dolby Atmos, dynamic head tracking, and Sonos’ useful TV Audio Swap feature. But outside of the home-theater connection, they were primarily Bluetooth headphones. Their Wi-Fi hardware was used when communicating with compatible Sonos home-theater products rather than allowing the headphones to operate as another normal destination inside a whole-home Sonos system.

For a company that built its reputation around making audio move easily from room to room, I always found that a little disappointing.
The new Sonos Ace Ultra finally starts to address it. Announced alongside the Beam Ultra and Sonos 27, Ace Ultra costs $449 and arrives September 29. There are plenty of conventional second-generation upgrades here — a new driver, stronger noise cancellation, Adaptive EQ, more microphones, and better battery life — but none of those is what immediately caught my attention.
Instead, it’s a new feature called Headphone Linking, which finally allows Ace Ultra to connect directly with the Sonos system around your home. To me, that is what Sonos headphones should have been able to do from the beginning.
I understood what Sonos was trying to do with the first Ace. Premium wireless headphones are a huge category, and Sonos already had customers using Arc and Beam soundbars who might appreciate being able to move their TV audio into headphones at night. TV Audio Swap was therefore a logical starting point.

Press the Content Key, and compatible Sonos home-theater audio can move from the soundbar to the headphones. That's useful. But Sonos isn't primarily interesting because it makes soundbars.
What has always separated Sonos from most audio companies is the system. You might have an Era 100 in the kitchen, an Arc Ultra under the television, a Move 2 somewhere else in the house, and additional speakers in other rooms. Music can follow you around the home without requiring a collection of separate Bluetooth connections.
Then Sonos released headphones that mostly sat outside that system. The original Ace even contained Wi-Fi hardware, but Sonos describes that connection as being used when connected to a Sonos home-theater player for audio and control data. For everyday music listening, the Ace remained fundamentally dependent on Bluetooth or a wired connection.
That always felt backward to me. I didn't necessarily want Sonos headphones because I thought Sonos would suddenly outdo every Bose, Sony, Apple, or Sennheiser headphone on traditional headphone features. I wanted to see what Sonos could do differently. Ace Ultra finally gives me an answer.
Sonos describes Headphone Linking as a way to pull audio already playing on a compatible Sonos product directly onto Ace Ultra through your local Wi-Fi network. After the initial setup, the idea is deliberately simple.

You can have music playing through the Sonos system, put on Ace Ultra, and use the Content Key to move that listening session into the headphones. The feature works with a broad range of Sonos products, including Arc, Arc Ultra, both Beam generations, Era 100, Era 300, Ray, Roam, Move, Amp, and others. That is much closer to what I imagined when Sonos first announced headphones.
Think about the practical use case rather than the networking technology behind it. I'm listening to music through speakers while doing something around the house. Someone else starts watching television, taking a phone call, or simply asks me to turn the music down. Instead of stopping the session, finding the album again on my phone, connecting the headphones, and restarting playback over Bluetooth, I can move what is already playing into Ace Ultra.
That's a small interaction. But small interactions are where Sonos has historically been good.
In an interview with TechRadar, Sonos CEO Tom Conrad described the new headphones as using the company's Headphone Engine 2 and broader networking technology to provide the type of integration customers expected from the first generation.
Personally, I find that far more interesting than another incremental ANC improvement.
Headphone Linking sounds great conceptually, but I wouldn't describe it as finished yet. Sonos is launching the feature in Early Access, and its own support documentation lists several restrictions that buyers should understand.

That SBC limitation is particularly worth mentioning.
One of Ace Ultra's headline audio features is lossless playback, yet the feature that makes these headphones uniquely Sonos currently doesn't support lossless audio.
That's an odd contradiction. I don't think it ruins the idea. Headphone Linking is clearly being released as something Sonos intends to develop rather than a completely finished feature, and I'd rather see the company expose those limitations than hide them.
But buyers should understand what they're getting on September 29 rather than assuming Ace Ultra has simply become a pair of fully fledged Wi-Fi headphones with every Sonos source available at maximum quality. It hasn't. At least not yet.
Even without Headphone Linking, Ace Ultra isn't just the old Ace with new software. Sonos is still using 40mm dynamic drivers, but these are now described as next-generation Sonos-engineered drivers. The company says the new design is intended to improve bass extension and detail. Until I've heard them myself, I'm treating those as claims rather than conclusions.

There is also Adaptive EQ, which adjusts the response based on factors that can affect the seal around your ears, including glasses, hair, head movement, and fit. That makes sense for ANC headphones. A change in seal doesn't just affect isolation; it can change bass response substantially as well.
The noise-cancellation system now uses 10 microphones, compared with eight beamforming microphones in the original Ace, and Sonos claims Ace Ultra can provide up to twice the ANC performance of its predecessor. Again, that's something I'd want to test in the real world before drawing any conclusions, particularly against class leaders from Bose and Sony.

So even without the Sonos-specific integration, this is a reasonably substantial refresh.
Battery life rises from up to 30 hours on the original Ace to 35 hours on Ace Ultra with ANC or Aware mode enabled. Five extra hours isn't going to transform how anyone uses headphones, but 35 hours is enough that I wouldn't spend much time thinking about charging them during a typical week.

The rapid-charge feature remains particularly useful: Sonos says three minutes of charging from an empty battery can provide up to three hours of listening. I'd much rather see that sort of practical improvement than an enormous battery claim achieved by disabling half the features people actually use.
Sonos also lists a 1,060mAh battery, and interestingly, the company is offering an Ace Ultra replacement battery kit for $25.
That last part may not sell many headphones, but I like seeing replaceability becoming part of the conversation around expensive wireless products. Batteries are consumable components, while a $449 pair of headphones ideally shouldn't be.
Ace Ultra launches for $449, which is the same price Sonos originally charged for the first Ace. The original model is now listed at $399 at Amazon and directly from Sonos.

That creates an interesting choice. Someone who simply wants a good pair of Sonos headphones for Bluetooth listening and TV Audio Swap may find the discounted original Ace perfectly adequate.
But I'd have a hard time choosing it personally.
The $50 difference isn't just buying five additional hours of battery or theoretically stronger ANC. It's buying the feature that, to me, finally explains why these are Sonos headphones rather than another premium Bluetooth model with a Sonos logo on the side.
That's a much easier premium to understand. Where things become less clear is when Ace Ultra is compared outside the Sonos ecosystem.
This is probably the biggest qualification I'd put on my enthusiasm. Someone with an Arc, Beam, Era speakers, Move, or a larger multi-room setup can look at Ace Ultra and see a feature set that fits into equipment they already use every day.

Headphone Linking has a purpose. TV Audio Swap has a purpose. The Sonos app has a purpose. The more Sonos hardware you already have around the house, the stronger the argument becomes.
But take all of that away and the situation changes considerably. Someone starting with zero Sonos products is looking at a $449 pair of premium ANC headphones entering one of the most competitive categories in consumer audio.
At that point, I'd want to compare them directly against the best options from Sony, Bose, Apple, Sennheiser, and others based on the things that matter with any headphones: sound quality, comfort, ANC, transparency mode, microphone quality, reliability, controls, and battery life.
Headphone Linking isn't much of an advantage when there is nothing to link them to. That's why I wouldn't call Ace Ultra an obvious recommendation for everyone based purely on the announcement. I think its value is unusually dependent on the rest of your house. And maybe that's exactly how Sonos headphones should work.
I haven't listened to Ace Ultra yet, so I can't tell you whether the new drivers are better, whether Adaptive EQ makes a meaningful difference, or whether the claimed ANC improvement puts Sonos alongside the best noise-canceling headphones available.
Those questions will need proper testing. But I already understand the product better than I understood the original Ace. The first generation felt like Sonos entering the premium-headphone market and then connecting those headphones back to its soundbars through TV Audio Swap.
Ace Ultra takes the more interesting approach. It asks what happens when headphones become another part of the Sonos system.
Headphone Linking isn't perfect yet. Its Early Access status, SBC transmission, source restrictions, and lack of lossless or spatial playback mean Sonos still has work to do. But the underlying idea makes sense to me in a way the first-generation implementation never completely did.
I don't need Sonos to make another pair of Bluetooth headphones simply because premium headphones are a lucrative category. I want Sonos headphones to take advantage of the thing Sonos has spent more than two decades building: a home full of audio products that know how to work together.
The original Ace showed that Sonos could make headphones. Ace Ultra finally starts showing me why I might want Sonos to make them.
