If you’ve been eyeing Shanling’s portable CD players but couldn’t quite justify the $589 price tag of the EC Zero T, there’s now a more wallet-friendly option on the table. Shanling has just launched the EC Zero AKM, a stripped-down version of the original that keeps most of the features, drops the price to $319, and still delivers the kind of listening experience CD lovers are looking for in 2025.

At first glance, you might not even notice the difference. The EC Zero AKM keeps the same boxy metal design, tempered glass lid, and retro-style controls as the EC Zero T. It even uses the same CD mechanism, with a magnetic clamp to keep your disc stable, whether you’re listening at home or walking around.

The big difference is inside. Instead of the R2R DAC and tube amp setup found in the EC Zero T, this version uses a digital AKM AK4493S DAC paired with dual SGM8262-2 amplifiers. It’s a more straightforward approach, but one that still delivers high-resolution playback and enough power for most headphones.

The EC Zero AKM is surprisingly versatile for its size. It has both 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs for headphones and line-level audio, plus a 3.5mm SPDIF output that supports coaxial and optical connections. That means you can plug it into a wide range of gear—from portable IEMs to full-size headphones, or even your home stereo.

Wireless listeners aren’t left out either. The player supports Bluetooth 5.3 with aptX Adaptive, aptX, and SBC, so it’ll work with a broad selection of modern wireless headphones.

If you're looking to digitize your CD collection, the EC Zero AKM has a handy trick: CD ripping at 1x speed. Just plug in a FAT32-formatted USB-C flash drive, and you can save your discs as WAV files, keeping the original audio quality. It's not the fastest ripping solution out there, but it’s built for accuracy, not speed.

The EC Zero AKM also functions as a high-res USB DAC, making it a useful add-on for your laptop or desktop audio setup. It supports playback up to 768kHz/32-bit PCM and DSD512, giving you plenty of room to explore high-resolution files beyond just physical discs.

The built-in 5,500mAh battery delivers up to 10 hours of playback when using wired headphones, and up to 18 hours over Bluetooth. If you’re using it at a desk, you can also power it via USB-C to bypass the battery altogether, a nice touch that could extend the battery’s overall lifespan.

Navigating the player is done via a 1.68-inch color screen, a tactile volume slider, and a row of physical buttons, something fans of older gear might appreciate. Shanling kept the layout consistent with the EC Zero T, so those upgrading or switching between the two models will feel right at home.

There’s also an optional PU leather case for $39, made to fit both EC Zero models. It’s a small extra for people who plan to carry the player around regularly and want a little extra protection.

The EC Zero AKM isn’t trying to replace your phone or compete with music streaming apps. But if you’ve got a CD collection gathering dust, or you want a dedicated, no-distractions player with solid output options, it might be just what you're looking for.

You get high-quality CD playback, modern output flexibility, and even CD ripping—all in a compact form that’s easy to travel with. It skips the tubes and exotic components, but in exchange, it offers better battery life and a much lower price tag.

So while $319 might still seem like a lot for a portable CD player in the streaming era, for folks who care about physical media—and owning their music—it’s a compelling alternative that hits a sweet spot between price and performance. The Shanling EC Zero AKM is available now at Amazon.
