Shanling is back with a fresh spin on its popular CD80, and this time, it's not just a refresh—it’s a full-blown update that modernizes the humble CD player for today's listeners. The new Shanling CD80 II keeps the physical media dream alive while offering a surprisingly robust feature set for headphone users, casual listeners, and hi-fi fans alike.

At first glance, the CD80 II might look like a sleek desktop unit designed to quietly play your favorite discs. But under the hood, it’s doing a lot more than just spinning CDs. This upgraded model includes a new DAC (digital-to-analog converter), better headphone outputs, Bluetooth support, USB playback, and a redesigned tray-loading mechanism—all for $359.

The most significant upgrade is the move from an ESS DAC in the original model to a Cirrus Logic CS43198 chip in the CD80 II. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, no worries—it’s the same DAC used in some of Shanling’s higher-end portable audio gear, and it’s known for delivering clear, detailed, and balanced audio.

What this means for the listener is that the CD80 II should provide a more refined listening experience, with better separation between instruments and a smoother overall sound. Whether you're spinning classic albums or feeding it high-resolution digital tracks via USB, you're getting a sound signature that’s a step up from the original.

One of the most appealing aspects of the CD80 II is its dual headphone outputs. Up front, you'll find a standard 3.5 mm jack alongside a 4.4 mm balanced output, a nod to the growing number of headphone enthusiasts using gear with balanced connectors.

The headphone amp inside is no slouch either. The 3.5 mm output delivers 215 mW into 32 ohms, while the 4.4 mm balanced jack boosts that up to a whopping 850 mW. This makes it powerful enough to drive a wide range of headphones, from efficient in-ear monitors to more demanding over-ear cans.

Shanling also made sure the headphone outputs have very low output impedance (under 1 ohm), which is good news for those with sensitive IEMs—this helps avoid hiss and ensures accurate sound reproduction.

The CD80 II swaps out the original's top-loading mechanism for a more traditional tray-loading CD drive. While that may not seem like a big deal, it’s a move that many users will likely appreciate. Tray-loading tends to be more stable and often results in better disc handling, especially with older or scratched CDs.

Shanling says the drive has been tuned for stability and precision, which should translate to fewer playback issues and smoother performance across a variety of disc types.

While it’s clearly a CD-first device, the CD80 II isn’t stuck in the past. Around the back, you’ll find a USB port that supports flash drives, allowing playback of high-resolution digital audio files up to 24-bit/192 kHz PCM and DSD256. It also supports gapless playback, which is great news if you listen to live albums or classical music.

There’s also Bluetooth 5.0 with support for SBC, AAC, and LDAC codecs. This means you can stream high-quality audio from your phone or tablet directly to the CD80 II without needing extra gear. It essentially becomes a wireless DAC for your devices.

Add in RCA analog outputs and a coaxial digital output, and the CD80 II can slot into just about any hi-fi setup—whether you're running it into a stereo amplifier or using it as a digital transport for a separate DAC.

Physically, the CD80 II keeps things tidy. It measures just 28 cm wide, 20 cm deep, and 5 cm tall, making it compact enough to fit on a desk or a crowded hi-fi shelf. A 1.3-inch LCD screen gives you track info and input feedback, and it comes in your choice of silver or black.

The included remote control and optional Eddict Player app make it easy to control playback and settings without constantly reaching for the device.

The Shanling CD80 II is an interesting product because it bridges the gap between old-school and new. If you have a collection of CDs you still enjoy, this player makes it easy to spin them without sacrificing modern conveniences. At the same time, it serves as a versatile headphone amp, a USB digital audio player, and even a Bluetooth receiver.

It’s clearly designed with headphone users in mind, but it can also act as the centerpiece of a minimalist stereo setup. And for those just getting into hi-fi, the CD80 II could be a great starting point that doesn’t require a full rack of gear to enjoy your music.

The Shanling CD80 II might not look like a big leap at first glance, but its smart feature set and thoughtful upgrades make it a compelling choice in today’s audio landscape. It respects the past by supporting CDs, embraces the present with Bluetooth and USB playback, and welcomes headphone lovers with powerful outputs and flexible connectivity.

At $359, it offers a lot of functionality in a compact package and gives your CD collection a very modern second life.
