Onkyo has been making amplifiers for decades, but the Y-40 feels like the company finally asked a simple question: "What does a modern stereo amplifier actually need?"

After spending time with it, I came away seriously impressed. It sounds excellent, looks fantastic, and packs just about every feature I'd want into a surprisingly compact chassis. Surprisingly compact. That's really the key word here.

It's compact for a hi-fi component, but it's still a little too large to comfortably live on most desks alongside a monitor and keyboard. One thing I appreciate about the Y-40 is that it doesn't force you to choose between old-school hi-fi and modern convenience. HDMI ARC is another welcome addition, making it incredibly easy to pair with a television without adding the complexity of a full AV receiver. Sound Quality

The Y-40 simply sounds excellent, especially when paired with a quality set of bookshelf speakers. That's really where I think this amplifier shines. It has more than enough power to make compact speakers come alive, delivering a wide, detailed soundstage with clean highs, natural vocals, and bass that feels controlled rather than exaggerated. At no point did it sound strained or like it was running out of steam, even when I pushed the volume higher than I normally would.

One Thing I Would Change

I do have one gripe. The knobs.

Everything else about the Y-40 feels premium, from the chassis to the display and overall fit and finish. Then you grab the volume knob. It feels oversized, a little cheap, and honestly out of place compared to the rest of the amplifier. I found myself wondering how these knobs made it into the final production design because they simply don't match the quality of everything around them. It's not enough to stop me from recommending the amplifier, but it's one of those small details you'll notice every single time you reach for the volume.

How It Compares

The Y-40 competes with products like the WiiM Amp Pro, Bluesound Powernode, and NAD C 700, but it carves out its own niche. The WiiM Amp Pro is a little smaller and excels as a streaming amplifier, making it a better fit for compact desktop setups. The Onkyo counters with a more traditional hi-fi feel, additional connectivity, and a presentation that feels more at home as the centerpiece of a stereo system.

Compared to the Bluesound Powernode, the Y-40 offers many of the same modern streaming conveniences while placing a stronger emphasis on flexibility. If you're someone who still enjoys physical media, a turntable, or multiple source components, the Onkyo makes a compelling case. The NAD C 700 remains the more premium option with its outstanding BluOS ecosystem and upscale industrial design, but it also commands a significantly higher price. The Y-40 delivers much of the same everyday functionality while remaining considerably more attainable.

Final Thoughts

The longer I spent with the Y-40, the more I liked it. Not because it reinvents stereo, but because it gets the fundamentals right. It sounds fantastic. It's loaded with useful features. It looks modern without trying too hard. And aside from the oddly oversized front knobs, it feels like a genuinely premium piece of equipment.
