Max Cracks Down on Account Sharing: Say Hello to the $7.99 "Friend Tax"

Max is the latest streaming service to say “no more” to password sharing — unless you’re willing to pay for it.

If you’ve been sharing your Max account with a friend or family member outside your home, you might want to check your settings. Warner Bros. Discovery has officially launched a new feature on Max called the Extra Member Add-On—and it’s their way of saying, “No more free rides.”

This update means that if someone outside your household wants to keep watching shows like The Last of Us or House of the Dragon on your Max account, they’ll need to be added as an extra member—and that comes with a monthly $7.99 price tag.

Here’s the gist: Max now lets the main account holder add one extra person to their subscription. That person gets their own login, their own profile, and the ability to stream on one device at a time. They’ll have access to everything the main account includes, from Max Originals to HBO classics and Warner Bros. movies.

This new feature is available to all Max subscribers—but only if you’re subscribed directly through Max. If you signed up via a bundle like Disney+ or Hulu, you’re out of luck for now.

And there are a few more rules to know:

  • You can only add one extra member per account.
  • The person must be at least 18 years old.
  • Both you and the extra member have to live in the same country.

If you’ve been letting someone else use your Max profile, the platform now offers a profile transfer option. This lets you move their profile—with watch history, recommendations, and settings—to a new Extra Member account. It’s a way to make the shift without losing any progress on your favorite shows.

We all knew this was coming. Max is just the latest in a long line of streamers cracking down on password sharing. Netflix made a similar move in 2023, and Disney+ followed shortly after. These companies are hoping to bring in more paying users, and it looks like the strategy is working—at least for Netflix.

Warner Bros. Discovery hinted that this was in the pipeline late last year. And now, in 2025, they’ve made it official.

The company is framing this as a way to give users “more flexibility,” but for many, it’s a clear signal that password sharing outside the home is on its way out. You might still get away with it for a while—but probably not for long.

So, is it worth the $7.99? That depends. If you’re only sharing your account with one person outside your home, adding them as an extra member is cheaper than making them get their own full subscription (which starts at $9.99/month with ads). But compared to Netflix’s ad-supported add-on ($6.99/month), Max is slightly pricier.

Still, some users may not be thrilled. Between rising subscription costs and these new add-on fees, it’s getting harder to justify holding on to every streaming service. And while the Add-On is limited to one person, many households were previously sharing with several friends or relatives.

Also, it’s not yet clear how Max plans to enforce all this. Netflix uses things like IP tracking and device location. Max hasn’t spelled out its approach yet—but expect something similar to roll out eventually.

For years, sharing passwords was a kind of unspoken perk. Now, companies are closing that loophole in hopes of getting more people to pay up. Max might be arriving late to this change, but they’re making up for it quickly.

The good news? You’ve got options. If you really want to keep sharing Max with someone outside your home, you can—but it’ll cost $7.99 a month. Whether that’s fair or frustrating depends on your perspective (and your budget).

Heads-up: You can manage Extra Member settings through the Max app or website.
