I’ll never forget the first time I heard music on my dad’s old KEF Codas. He had them hooked up to a vintage turntable in our living room, and they were the speakers that introduced me to everything from The Beatles to Pink Floyd. So when I heard that KEF was bringing the Coda name back with a new all-in-one wireless speaker system—the Coda W—you better believe I paid attention. This isn’t just a reboot for nostalgia’s sake; it’s a modern reimagining of a classic, with the kind of vinyl-friendly features and Bluetooth convenience that fits how I listen today.

KEF already has a few highly-regarded wireless speaker systems under its belt — the LSX II and LS50 Wireless II, to name a couple — but the Coda W goes in a different direction. There’s no Wi-Fi, no AirPlay, and no Google Cast. Instead, this speaker pair sticks with Bluetooth 5.4 for streaming and leans on physical connections for everything else.

That might sound like a step back at first, but it actually makes setup simpler and more flexible. If you’ve got a turntable, a laptop, a TV, or even an old CD player, the Coda W is designed to plug right in.

Both speakers in the pair feature KEF’s well-known 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array — a design that puts the tweeter in the center of the woofer to make sound more evenly spread out across the room. Each cabinet includes a 5.25-inch woofer and 1-inch aluminum tweeter, with a combined 200 watts of power across the system. That’s enough to fill a medium or large room without breaking a sweat.

KEF’s Music Integrity Engine is also working behind the scenes, using digital signal processing (DSP) to clean up timing issues and make sure everything sounds tight and balanced.

The Coda W supports Bluetooth streaming with aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless, which means you’ll get better-than-basic audio quality — up to CD-quality (16-bit/44.1kHz) — without a cable in sight.

Prefer to keep things wired? You’ve got options:

  • HDMI ARC for easy TV hookup
  • USB-C for high-res audio straight from your computer
  • Optical input for consoles or disc players
  • RCA line-in
  • MM phono input for connecting a turntable directly

That last one is especially handy. If your record player doesn’t have a built-in preamp, the Coda W has you covered. If it does, just use the RCA input instead.

And if you want more bass, there’s a subwoofer output on the back — plus support for KEF’s wireless subwoofer adapter, which helps you avoid cable clutter.

Out of the box, the system comes with a 3-meter interspeaker cable that connects the powered main unit to the second speaker. If your room layout needs more reach, KEF sells a longer 8-meter C-Link cable separately. The speakers also feature rear ports to help with bass response — though like any rear-ported design, placement near a wall can affect how it sounds.

For control, there are simple buttons on the top for source switching and playback. If you want more fine-tuning, the KEF Connect app gives you access to EQ settings and firmware updates, though keep in mind that without Wi-Fi, you won’t get built-in streaming or smart features.

The Coda W has a clean, boxy design that looks good in just about any space. You can choose from five finishes: Vintage Burgundy, Moss Green, Midnight Blue, Nickel Grey, or Dark Titanium. It also works with KEF’s SQ1 floor stands if you want to get the speakers off your desk or shelf and into a better listening position.

The big omission here is Wi-Fi. That means no AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, or integration with smart assistants. For some people, that could be a dealbreaker, especially if you’re used to networked streaming or multi-room audio.

But if you mostly stream over Bluetooth, spin vinyl, or connect to your TV and computer with cables, the Coda W’s setup might actually feel more straightforward and less prone to bugs or app fatigue.

“Our goal has always been to deliver the most authentic sound possible – the kind that forges an emotional connection,” says Grace Lo, president and head of global marketing at KEF. “We designed the Coda W for those of us who love the ritual of vinyl – the magic of dropping a needle on a record, that moment of anticipation. With Coda W, you can get completely immersed in the depth of your records, appreciating the richness and nuance in every note, then switch to streaming a new track seamlessly. It’s about rediscovering your favorite songs like never before.”
