If you've been thinking about ditching your soundbar and dipping your toes into real surround sound, Denon’s new AVR-S270BT might be the nudge you need. Priced at $399, it’s a straightforward 5.1-channel AV receiver built with beginners in mind—whether you're setting up your first home theater system or adding surround sound to a smaller space like a bedroom or den.

The AVR-S270BT delivers 70 watts per channel into 8-ohm speakers, which is plenty for typical bookshelf or satellite speaker setups. It can even push up to 140 watts per channel into 6-ohm speakers if you need a little more kick. It doesn’t support Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, so you won’t get that immersive, height-layered sound. But for traditional 5.1 surround, it’s got you covered.

You still get the essentials: Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio. Plus, Denon includes Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS Neo:6, so if you’re watching something in stereo, the receiver can upmix the audio and spread it across all your speakers.

The AVR-S270BT includes five HDMI inputs in total. Three of those support 4K passthrough with HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG. The other two are limited to 1080p. It also supports BT.2020 wide color for those who care about accurate color reproduction in 4K content.

You can hook up everything from a Blu-ray player to a streaming stick or game console, but gamers should take note—there’s no support for 4K at 120Hz. If high refresh rates are important to you for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X gaming, this receiver may not be the best fit.

On the plus side, HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) is supported. That means your TV can send audio back to the receiver through a single HDMI cable, which cuts down on clutter and simplifies your setup.

Denon clearly had beginners in mind here. One standout feature is the guided setup assistant, which walks you through the installation process step by step. If you're not used to setting up AV gear, this makes a big difference.

Another nice touch is Denon’s Quick Select buttons, which let you save your favorite input, volume, and sound mode combos. You can access these either on the front panel or on the included remote control. It’s helpful for switching between, say, movie night settings and casual TV watching without diving into menus.

The AVR-S270BT includes Bluetooth, so you can wirelessly stream music straight from your phone, tablet, or laptop. That means it’s not just for movies—you can use it as your everyday speaker system, too.

To help save power, there's also an ECO Mode that lowers power consumption while maintaining sound quality. It’s not flashy, but it’s practical—especially if you’re planning to use the receiver for long periods.

Denon suggests this receiver is ideal for smaller rooms or secondary setups—like a bedroom, office, or basement hangout—where full Dolby Atmos just doesn’t make sense. With a 5.1 layout, you still get surround sound without needing ceiling or upfiring speakers, and the AVR-S270BT keeps things simple without sacrificing core features.

No, the AVR-S270BT isn’t trying to compete with Denon’s higher-end receivers, and it’s not aiming to impress hardcore AV geeks. But that’s kind of the point. If you want real 5.1 surround sound without spending a fortune or getting overwhelmed with features you might not use, this receiver hits the mark. It’s a great option for anyone ready to move on from a soundbar—but not quite ready to jump into Atmos and 9-speaker chaos.

The Denon AVR-S270BT is priced at $399 and is expected to be on sale as early as late October on Denon’s official website.
