Most pool robot reviews you read are about one robot doing one job. A skimmer pulling leaves off the top, or a cordless cleaner crawling the floor and walls. Beatbot wants you to think about the problem differently. They sell their new iSkim skimmer and Sora 30 cordless cleaner as a pair, a "Total Pool Care System," with the idea that surface and subsurface get divided between two specialists rather than asked of one generalist.

I have a pool that punishes any single-robot setup. We're in Florida, in a wooded area, with a live palm hanging right over the water and a screen enclosure that filters basically nothing of consequence. Pollen, leaves, the occasional palm frond, kids' toys, the works. I've spent the last couple of years running a mix of cordless floor cleaners (a few generations of Aiper Scuba, most recently their newer flagship) and the Aiper EcoSurfer S2 on the surface. Mixed-brand, two-robot setup. It works.

When the iSkim and Sora 30 showed up, the question wasn't whether two robots beat one. I already knew the answer. The question was whether a single-brand pair, designed to be sold together, actually delivers something a mixed setup doesn't. After a few weeks running both in the kind of pool that exposes every weakness, my answer is yes, more clearly than I expected.


Design

iSkim

The iSkim is a black, catamaran style solar skimmer with the entire top face given over to a 24-watt solar panel. It's built from ASA plastic, the kind of UV-resistant compound that doesn't chalk or yellow after a few summers in direct sun, and it's rated IP68, which means fully sealed against dust and continuous submersion. For something that lives in chlorinated water year-round, that matters.

What you notice first when you pick it up is how light it is for the basket size. The basket is huge for a skimmer at 9 liters, which sounds like a marketing number until you start emptying it less often than the other skimmers I've owned.

The detail I want to flag, because nobody else seems to have noticed it yet, is that the iSkim has no flap door. Most surface skimmers have a hinged baffle at the intake that closes when the unit reverses or turns, so the debris it just collected doesn't float back out into the pool. The iSkim skips that mechanism entirely. Instead it leans on a wide intake (about 29 by 270 millimeters, so a pretty generous mouth) and an anti-spill baffle further inside the basket. The first time I deployed it I assumed I'd watch a little cloud of leaves escape every time it turned around. It just doesn't happen. Whatever combination of intake geometry and internal baffling Beatbot worked out, debris goes in and stays in. One less moving part to fail eventually.

The other design choice worth calling out is that the iSkim doesn't ship with a charge cord. The box has the unit, a basic accessory set, and that's it. Beatbot clearly expects you to rely on solar. If you want a wall adapter, it's a separate purchase. I have mixed feelings about this. As a statement of design intent it's confident. As an out-of-the-box experience it's a little jarring when you're used to every electronic device arriving with its own charger.

Sora 30

The Sora 30 looks like a piece of consumer electronics in a way most pool robots don't. It won the iF Design Award this year, which is a real industrial design credential, not a participation trophy. The Cosmic Orange colorway I tested is genuinely useful underwater: you can see exactly where the robot is on the floor of the pool from across the deck, which makes intervening or just watching it work a lot easier than the dark-blue robots that disappear three feet down.

At 19.6 pounds it's noticeably lighter than the previous-generation flagships I've handled. You can lift it one-handed out of the pool without it being a thing. The hull is shaped like something that wants to lean forward into the water, low-drag, with smooth contours that probably help with the wall-climbing physics as much as they help with the photography. There are guide wheels along the sides to protect pool walls when it's climbing, and the charging contacts on the bottom are titanium, which is corrosion-resistant in salt and chlorine environments. Small touches, but they're the kind of choices that suggest somebody thought about the third year of ownership, not just unboxing day.

The filter basket loads from the top. You pop a removable cover (no hinged lid that you have to fight) and pull the basket straight up. This is one of those design decisions that sounds trivial until you've used a robot where you have to flip the unit upside down on the deck to access the basket and watch a quart of murky pool water run out across your tiles.


Features

iSkim, lean by design

The iSkim is the cheaper of Beatbot's two skimmers, sitting below the iSkim Ultra in the lineup. What's interesting is that the cheaper unit actually beats the pricier one on three specs that matter for daily use. The base iSkim claims up to 28 hours of runtime on a full charge with no sunlight (lab conditions, so take it with salt, but still). It supports both 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, while the Ultra is stuck on 2.4 only. And it carries a 3-year warranty versus the Ultra's 2.

What you give up to get there is the gimmicky stuff. No clarifier dispenser. No talking-speaker voice broadcasts. No side brushes. No path planning, just random coverage with smart re-routing. The propulsion is a basic dual-motor setup, with one additional motor running the front roller brush. Three motors total versus the Ultra's seven.

The app is the standard Beatbot app, with one feature I didn't expect to use much and ended up loving. There's a remote navigation mode with an accelerate button. The iSkim normally moves at a casual skimmer pace, which is fine for unattended cleaning, but the accelerate button kicks it up to something genuinely quick. My kids spent an entire afternoon driving it around the pool from their phones, chasing down floating leaves like a remote-controlled boat that also does chores. They had a great time. The pool got cleaner faster than scheduled cleaning would have done it. I'd seriously underrate this feature if I described it only as "manual control" the way the spec sheet does. It turns the skimmer into something the family actively engages with, and the practical upside is that targeted accelerated passes clear debris piles way faster than a slow random walk.

Sora 30, the headline features

The Sora 30 has three features that justify its price step over the cheaper Sora 10 ($699) and bring it into competition with much more expensive cordless robots.

The first is SmartDrain. When a cleaning cycle finishes, or when the battery drops below 12%, the Sora 30 doesn't just stop on the floor and wait for you to fish it out. Internal chambers push water out and draw air in, the unit becomes buoyant, and it floats up to the surface on its own. Then it edges over to the pool wall and drains additional water before you lift it. The lift weight when you pick it up is meaningfully less than a robot that's been sitting on the floor full of water. Beatbot describes the mechanism as submarine-ballast inspired, which is more accurate than most marketing copy.

The second is the battery and runtime. 10,000 mAh, up to five hours of floor cleaning on a single charge, around four and a half hours when you add wall and waterline work. For a cordless robot in this price range, that's class-leading. The corded Dolphins will run forever, but if you're committed to cordless, this is about as much runtime as you can get.

The third is the eight-inch minimum shallow depth. If you have a tanning ledge or a baja shelf, most pool robots either can't get up onto it or fall off it. The Sora 30 will clean platforms as shallow as eight inches deep (provided the platform is at least about a meter square). The Sora 10 needs twelve inches, which sounds close until you realize most tanning ledges are right in that gap.

Navigation is handled by what Beatbot calls SonicSense: dual ultrasonic sensors, one forward-facing for walls and obstacles, one bottom-facing for slope and wall detection. There are 14 sensors total feeding into a Cortex-A7 quad-core processor. The robot uses pre-planned movement patterns (an S-shape on the floor, an N-pattern on walls) and the sensors handle obstacle avoidance and rerouting rather than building a real-time map. The brushes are dual independent rollers, one at the front and one at the rear, which can spin at different speeds for tighter turns and better wall scrubbing. The suction intake is 25 by 170 millimeters, big enough to swallow acorns, large leaves, and the kind of debris that gums up smaller intakes.

The app does mode selection, weekly scheduling, battery monitoring, cleaning history, and OTA updates. Both the iSkim and Sora 30 live in the same Beatbot app, which is a small thing that matters: I have one app on my phone for both robots, not two. One thing to know (and this is the case for almost every cordless pool robot on the market): you can't control the Sora 30 while it's underwater. Water blocks Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The app reconnects when the robot surfaces. Set your modes before you drop it in.


Setup

Both robots are drop-in. No dock to mount in the pool, no cable to route, no plumbing to interrupt.

The iSkim arrived charged enough to run, which is good because (as mentioned) it doesn't come with a charge cord. I dropped it in the pool, paired it in the app over Bluetooth (which then hands off to Wi-Fi), set a schedule, and that was it. The schedule lets you pick a daily window when you want it running, which matters because solar makes more sense during the day even if the battery can technically run it overnight.

The Sora 30 needed an initial charge before its first cycle. The charger uses titanium contacts and runs at 65 watts. About four and a half hours from empty to full. App pairing was the same flow as the iSkim, just a different device added to the same profile.


Performance

iSkim, surface duty

The iSkim moves around the surface at a faster clip than the previous skimmers I've tested. Not dramatically faster, but enough that you notice it covers the pool more times per hour. With a busy pool and constant pollen load, more passes means a cleaner surface for longer stretches.

The 9-liter basket is the real story. With the palm dropping seeds and small leaves into the pool continuously, plus whatever blows in through the screen, I went from emptying the basket every couple of days on my old skimmer to every four or five with the iSkim. The wide intake handles palm material and small leaves without the bow-wave effect that plagues a lot of skimmers, where the unit pushes a wave of water in front of it and the debris just slides around the body instead of getting sucked in. The iSkim does some of this (no skimmer is immune) but the wider mouth and faster pace cut it down to a degree I haven't seen on other units in the category.

Where the iSkim genuinely surprised me is the anti-stranding behavior. We have a shallow step in our pool, about an inch and a half below the water surface, with a corner that's been a graveyard for previous skimmers. They get pushed into the corner, ride up onto the step, and sit there with their propellers spinning above water until you wade in and rescue them.

The iSkim hits the same corner. It got up onto the step multiple times during my testing. Every time, it reversed strongly, backed itself off the step, and got going again. Not once did I have to retrieve it. The bumpers underneath are adjustable and respond to shallow water, and whatever combination of that hardware plus the sensor logic is at work, it actually solves the most common solar-skimmer failure mode in a pool with a sun shelf or step.

I mentioned the remote drive mode earlier, but it's worth coming back to in the performance section because it changed how I think about the product. The accelerate button turns a passive skimmer into an active tool. When the wind pushes a pile of leaves into one corner, I can grab my phone, drive the iSkim straight to the pile at high speed, and clear it in under a minute. The kids took it further. They spent an entire Saturday afternoon trading the phone back and forth, racing the iSkim around the pool, hunting down individual floating bugs, and turning routine debris cleanup into a game. The basket filled up faster than it would have under autonomous operation, the pool ended up cleaner than scheduled cleaning would have left it, and we all had fun. I don't know how many people will use the feature this way, but it converted what could have been a boring appliance into something the family actively engages with.

Edge and corner debris is the one area where the iSkim's lean feature set shows. The iSkim Ultra has spinning brushes on the front corners to scoop debris toward the basket. The base model relies on its hull shape and the wheel guides instead. Leaves that pile up against a wall corner sometimes get missed on the first few passes during autonomous mode. In practice this stopped mattering once I figured out that I could just drive the iSkim into the corner manually with the accelerate button. Beatbot probably didn't design the remote drive feature as a workaround for the missing side brushes, but it functions as one, and a fun one at that.

The filter maintenance dividend is real, the same way it was when I started running a dedicated skimmer years ago. Debris caught on the surface never reaches the cartridge filter. During pollen-heavy weeks I noticed my cartridge cleaning frequency dropping the same way it did the first time I added a solar skimmer to my routine.

Sora 30, everything under the surface

The Sora 30's headline cleaning behavior is the wall climbing. Watching the robot work its way up a vertical wall to the waterline, scrub along the tile line, and then come back down with the brushes still engaged is the kind of thing that makes you stop and look. The Sora 30 does it consistently. Steep walls, the waterline tile, the transitions where floor meets wall. It handles them.

The S-pattern floor navigation is methodical. The robot runs a planned path, and the sensor array handles obstacles by rerouting around them. In my pool, with its sun shelf and corners and the occasional pool toy floating around, the Sora 30 worked through the full floor without any spots that bothered me on inspection. Coverage over a five-hour cycle is thorough.

The dual independent rollers are doing real work. You can see it on the waterline tile, where the front brush pre-scrubs and the rear brush finishes the job, and at corners where the two brushes spinning at different rates let the robot pivot more cleanly than a single-brush design.

The Sora 30 has a 6,800 GPH suction rating. I can't measure that directly, but I can tell you the intake handles real debris without choking. Acorns, palm seeds, oak leaves, the occasional kids' bandage. The 5.2-liter basket fills up faster on heavy-debris days than on light ones (as you'd expect) and the top-loading access makes emptying it a 15-second job.

SmartDrain is the feature I appreciated more the longer I owned the robot. When a cycle ends, the unit floats up, edges over to the wall, drains, and waits for me. The app sends a notification. I walk out, pick up a robot that weighs noticeably less than it would have sitting on the floor full of water, and set it on the charger. Compare that to the old experience of fishing around with a pool pole to hook a robot from the floor, lifting it up through three feet of water, and then carrying a dripping water-logged unit to its charging spot. It's a genuine quality-of-life improvement, and the kind of feature that turns routine pool maintenance from a chore into something you barely think about.

Battery life held up well. The 4.5-hour mixed floor/wall/waterline cycles completed with charge to spare, every time. Year-three battery degradation is the unknown that applies to every cordless pool robot, and I'll know more about it when I'm three years in. For now, the Sora 30 is doing the work it's supposed to do, with no surprises that made me regret choosing cordless.

The one structural caveat to know about going in is the app's underwater dead zone. No real-time control or monitoring during cleaning, because water blocks Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This is true for the entire cordless robot category, not a Beatbot-specific limitation, but if you're used to a corded robot or you expect to tweak settings mid-cycle, set expectations accordingly. Configure your modes before you drop it in.

The two of them together

Running the iSkim and Sora 30 simultaneously, surface and subsurface, is where the system claim earns or loses its keep. In my pool, with peak pollen, the constant palm debris, and kids in the water most afternoons, it works.

The surface stays visibly clear. The floor stays clean. The waterline tile doesn't develop the pollen ring that I usually have to brush off manually. The cartridge filter sees less load. Nobody who has come over has commented that the pool looks anything but clean.


Brief Comparisons

The iSkim sits in a competitive segment with the Dolphin Skimmi at around $499 and the Betta SE at around $399. The Dolphin Skimmi has bigger 3-inch propellers and the brand-trust advantage of being a Maytronics product. The Betta SE is a top-loading-basket, no-app, dead-simple unit that punches above its price. The iSkim's pitch against both is the larger basket, the longer claimed runtime, the 3-year warranty, the 5 GHz Wi-Fi for buyers who care, and the remote drive feature that, as I described above, turned out to be more useful than I expected. At its $419 to $499 street price, it's a credible value play, and the app-driven manual control puts it in a different category than the dead-simple alternatives.

The Sora 30 is more complicated. In the cordless segment, its main rivals are the Aiper Scuba V3 at around $949 (shorter runtime, no SmartDrain) and Beatbot's own Sora 10 at $699 (same core cleaning, no SmartDrain, requires 12-inch shallow depth instead of 8). Against those, the Sora 30 wins on retrieval convenience and shallow ledge handling.

The harder comparison is against corded robots in the same price band. A Dolphin Sigma or Dolphin Premier, both corded, will run unlimited cycles, draw mains power for sustained suction, and use finer filtration than the Sora 30's standard 150-micron mesh. For raw cleaning performance per dollar, corded robots at $1,000 generally outperform cordless robots at the same price. Buying the Sora 30 means valuing the cordless convenience (no cable management, easier retrieval, no risk of cable damage) over maximum raw cleaning output. That's a legitimate choice, and after a few weeks running a cordless setup, I'd make it again without hesitation.

The other comparison worth raising specifically for combo buyers is the Sora 70, Beatbot's $1,499 flagship. The Sora 70 does floor, wall, waterline, and surface cleaning in one unit via its JetPulse system. So the natural question is: instead of buying an iSkim and a Sora 30 for $1,300-plus together, why not buy a single Sora 70 for $1,499?

The honest answer depends on your debris load. The Sora 70 surface cleaning is real but it's not as continuous as a dedicated solar skimmer running all day. If your pool only sees light surface debris, a Sora 70 alone is the cleaner system architecture: one robot, one charging routine, one warranty. If your pool sees real, constant surface debris like mine does, a dedicated solar skimmer running 24/7 stays ahead of the load in a way an intermittent surface mode can't.

I've also tested the major Aiper cordless surface and floor units in my Florida pool over the last couple of seasons. I'm not going to do a head-to-head here because it'd derail the review, but it's the lens through which I'm reading the Beatbot pair. The Beatbot units feel more polished out of the box, the system integration is tighter, and the iSkim's ‘accelerated’ remote drive feature is something I don't have an equivalent for on the Aiper side.


Final Thoughts

A few weeks in, running both robots through a Florida pool that breaks lesser pool care setups, the verdict is straightforward. The iSkim and Sora 30 work, individually and as a pair, with a level of polish that genuinely surprised me coming from a relatively young brand.

The iSkim solves continuous surface skimming better than I expected at the price. The no-flap-door design simply doesn't spill. The 9-liter basket pushes maintenance from a near-daily check to a weekly one. The anti-stranding behavior handles my problem step without me ever rescuing it. And the remote drive feature, which I almost ignored at first, became the way my whole family interacts with the pool. The Sora 30 climbs walls reliably, scrubs the waterline tile as part of its normal cycle, drains and parks itself for retrieval, and runs long enough on a charge that you stop thinking about it. The shallow-platform capability handles the sun shelf that other robots have either fallen off or refused to climb.

Two refinements I'd want to see in the next revision. On the iSkim, Beatbot should include a charge cord in the box. The unit is designed for solar primacy, which is fine, but a wall charger as backup belongs in the package at this price, not as a separate purchase you make in March when a week of overcast weather hits. On the Sora 30, the app's complete dead zone during underwater cleaning is becoming an industry norm I wish someone would break. Even basic status pings (battery percentage, current mode, time remaining) would change the experience meaningfully.

The pair earns my top recommendation. For pool owners with serious debris loads, a sunny climate, and an appetite for cordless convenience, the iSkim and Sora 30 deliver complete, hands-off pool care at a combined price competitive with stepping up to a single Sora 70 or buying two best-in-class mixed-brand units. The system works. Each robot stands on its own. The remote drive feature on the iSkim is a genuine differentiator. The SmartDrain retrieval on the Sora 30 is the kind of quality-of-life improvement you don't appreciate until you've used it.
