Apple TV 4K 2025: What to Expect From Apple’s Next Streaming Box

The 2025 Apple TV 4K could bring faster performance, smarter software, and maybe even a lower price — here’s what’s being reported.

I’ve owned every Apple TV since the old silver box that looked more like a Mac mini than a streamer. And while they don’t always get the spotlight of iPhones or iPads, they’ve consistently shaped how I watch TV. With the 2025 Apple TV 4K, it feels like Apple might be cooking up one of its most ambitious upgrades yet.

Apple hasn’t confirmed hardware yet, but we already know tvOS 26 is coming this fall. Pair that with the fact that the last hardware update was back in 2022, and it seems likely that Apple is lining up a refreshed box before the holidays.

At WWDC, Apple pulled the curtain back on tvOS 26, and it’s the most noticeable design update in years. The interface now uses what Apple calls a “Liquid Glass” look — lighter, more translucent menus that keep the show or movie you’re watching visible in the background. It feels more like an extension of your TV screen than a static menu.

There are also new quality-of-life features:

  • Easier profile switching for households where everyone wants their own watchlist and recommendations.
  • A refreshed Apple TV app with larger poster art and a layout that looks more like a movie theater wall than a flat list.
  • FaceTime improvements, including Contact Posters (so your friends’ calls look the same as they do on iPhone) and more robust Live Captions.
  • Apple Music Sing upgrades, letting you use your iPhone as a karaoke mic — which sounds silly, but in practice, it makes living-room singalongs much easier.

All of this is coming to Apple TV 4K (2nd gen and newer) this fall as a free update. That means even if you don’t upgrade hardware, your Apple TV will feel fresh.

The last Apple TV refresh was late 2022, when Apple bumped the box to the A15 Bionic chip, added HDR10+, and swapped the Lightning port on the Siri Remote for USB-C. That’s almost three years ago — a long stretch in Apple’s product cycle.

Reports from Bloomberg and MacRumors suggest the next Apple TV 4K is planned for late 2025, and that makes sense. tvOS 26’s flashier design and new multitasking tricks would shine brightest on updated silicon. Plus, Apple has been gradually expanding Apple Arcade’s portfolio with console-quality titles — something that would benefit from more horsepower under the hood.

Here’s what’s floating around the rumor mill, and what I think about each one:

  • A Faster Chip: The big expectation is an upgrade to either the A17 Pro, A18, or even the next-gen A19 chip. That would be a leap over the current A15 and could unlock modern gaming features like hardware-accelerated ray tracing. I’ve tested games like Resident Evil Village on the iPhone 15 Pro, and it’s clear Apple is positioning its devices as legitimate gaming hardware. If that same chip shows up in the Apple TV, it could mean a serious boost for Apple Arcade and console ports.
  • Wi-Fi 7 and Apple’s Own Wireless Chip: Some reports suggest Apple is planning to swap out Broadcom parts and use an in-house Wi-Fi/Bluetooth solution. Pair that with Wi-Fi 7 support, and you’re looking at faster, more stable streaming for crowded households. Even stepping up to Wi-Fi 6E would be welcome, especially for folks who notice buffering during 4K HDR streaming.
  • A Lower Price: Apple has been criticized for pricing the Apple TV above Roku, Fire TV, and Chromecast options. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst and well-known leaker in the Apple world said Apple may finally try to bring the box under $100, making it easier to buy one for every room. If that happens (but don’t get your hopes up), I think it could be Apple’s way of making Apple TV the default choice for anyone already in the Apple ecosystem.
  • A Built-In Camera: This one is less certain, but code hints and ongoing rumors point to a possible camera for FaceTime calls. Right now, FaceTime on Apple TV works through Continuity Camera with your iPhone — which is clever, but not always convenient. A built-in camera would make Apple TV more like a living-room communication hub.
  • Remote Improvements: Apple quietly improved the Siri Remote in 2022, but there’s still room for more. Some speculate that Apple could rebrand the Siri button as an Apple Intelligence button, tying into its new AI system. Personally, I’d love to see features like a built-in speaker so the remote can beep when you’re hunting for it between couch cushions.

There’s also talk of a separate smart-home display in the works at Apple, which could arrive in 2026. That leaves the Apple TV 4K as the company’s premium living-room device — the one that handles your media, games, and doubles as a HomeKit hub.

The 2025 model could also play a role in Apple’s Apple Intelligence rollout, acting as a voice-first, living-room-friendly interface. Imagine asking your Apple TV to recommend a movie based on your past viewing, pull up sports highlights, or even manage your smart lights more naturally. That kind of integration seems like the next logical step.

If you bought the 2022 Apple TV 4K, you’re still in good shape. It’s fast, supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and already integrates with Thread smart-home devices. With tvOS 26 coming this fall, you’ll get a lot of the new look and features without spending another dime.

If you’re on an older Apple TV or debating your first one, I’d say it’s worth waiting a few months. The 2025 refresh could bring faster gaming performance, better networking, and possibly a lower price — all of which make it more future-proof.

The 2025 Apple TV 4K could be Apple’s most versatile streaming box yet. Between the rumored performance boost, smarter networking, and tighter ties to Apple Intelligence, it feels like Apple is preparing the device to do more than just stream Netflix.

Whether Apple hits the rumored sub-$100 mark (I’d be shocked if it does) remains to be seen, but if it does, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple TV adoption finally explode. Until then, tvOS 26 is the story — and come fall, every Apple TV owner will feel like they’ve unwrapped something new.
