Yamaha kicked off the soundbar movement nearly 20 years ago with the YSP-1, and now it’s circling back with what might be its most ambitious system yet. The company just introduced its new flagship soundbar system, the True X Surround 90A—also known as the SR-X90A—and it’s a serious attempt at recreating the scale of a traditional home theater setup, all within a more compact and wireless package.

Unlike most soundbars that rely on virtual surround or limit sound to the front of the room, the SR-X90A is a full system. It includes a large main soundbar, a wireless subwoofer, and two wireless rear speakers. Everything connects through Yamaha’s True X ecosystem, which means no extra wires snaking across your floor—and setup should be fairly straightforward.

One of the most unique aspects of the SR-X90A is how it handles overhead sound, which is a key part of Dolby Atmos and other immersive audio formats. While many soundbars include just two up-firing drivers, Yamaha’s approach is far more aggressive: 12 beam drivers are built in just for the height channels—six on each side of the bar. These speakers are angled to bounce sound off your ceiling to create a more convincing sense of space, like a helicopter flying above or rain falling around you.

This isn’t new territory for Yamaha. The company was behind one of the first soundbars to use beam speaker technology back in 2004. For the SR-X90A, Yamaha has borrowed that experience and paired it with its YDA-141 amplifier, claiming the setup delivers the kind of precise sound positioning you’d normally only get from ceiling-mounted speakers.

In total, the soundbar packs 19 drivers: those 12 beam speakers, plus four full-range oval-shaped drivers and three tweeters up front. The oval drivers were custom-designed to fit the slim shape of the bar while still offering strong midrange sound and minimizing distortion, even at higher volumes.

The SR-X90A isn’t limited to Dolby Atmos. It also supports DTS:X and Auro-3D, giving it broad compatibility with different types of content. Whether you’re watching movies on a streaming service or playing Blu-rays, it should be able to handle whatever immersive sound format is thrown at it.

Also onboard is Yamaha’s SURROUND:AI, a feature that first showed up in the company’s AV receivers. This uses real-time processing to analyze what you’re watching—like whether it’s action-heavy or dialogue-focused—and adjusts the sound accordingly. The idea is to make the experience more dynamic without you needing to fiddle with sound modes.

The system includes a newly designed wireless subwoofer that uses Yamaha’s symmetrical flare port. That’s a fancy way of saying the port design helps reduce distortion caused by air moving in and out of the cabinet. According to Yamaha, it cuts down on unwanted noise by about 20 decibels compared to more common designs.

The rear speakers are also pretty versatile. Not only do they handle surround effects, but you can pop them off and use them as Bluetooth speakers in other parts of the house. So if you’re hosting a party or just want to listen to music in the kitchen, you can bring them along.

On the back, you’ll find HDMI eARC, HDMI passthrough, and optical input, covering most home theater setups. For wireless streaming, the system works with Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay, and Yamaha’s MusicCast platform, which lets you control everything from a mobile app and connect with other MusicCast-enabled gear in your home.

Physically, the soundbar is built with a metal housing, comes with large speaker grilles, and includes a wall mount in the box. It’s clearly designed to look and feel like a high-end product, and the attention to detail suggests it’s built for long-term use.

The True X Surround 90A is scheduled to launch in September 2025, with a price tag of $3,499 in the US and £2,499 in the UK. That puts it in the same ballpark as high-end soundbar systems like Sonos Arc Ultra and Sony Bravia Theater Bar 9, and notably more expensive than some popular models like Samsung’s HW-Q990F.

For that price, though, you’re getting a full surround setup with a serious number of drivers, support for multiple immersive formats, and plenty of flexibility—especially with the detachable Bluetooth rear speakers. It’s clearly aimed at people who want a big movie theater experience at home, but who might not want to go down the full AV receiver and speaker route.

Whether it delivers that experience as promised will come down to how it performs when we test it. But on paper, the Yamaha SR-X90A is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious all-in-one soundbar systems on the market.
