Smart security cameras have changed the way people ensure the safety of their family and home. Even as the rest of the smart home landscape doesn’t always deliver on the massive hype it started receiving years ago, DIY home surveillance has never been easier or more effective.

But the highest-resolution options with the best features can get expensive, with the most prominent brands checking in at hundreds of dollars. So, I was excited to run across the Baseus S2 — highlighted for its innovation at CES 2025 — and its premium feature set, available at just over $100 MSRP.

What the Baseus S2 camera promises

And how it delivers

Baseus started making a name for itself years ago with a wide variety of chargers, power banks, and cables, which tend to punch well above their class in terms of price to performance. The Baseus Security lineup, launched just this year, continues that tradition, with a glut of high-end features at reasonable prices.

The Baseus S2 stands out not only because of its vast set of features. A 4K sensor at this price will definitely turn heads, as will the bright spotlight, color night vision, and ever-advancing AI facial recognition. But the most novel part of this home security camera is the integrated solar panel.

The most impressive feature is arguably the dual power system. The integrated solar panel can generate up to 900mAh of charge daily under optimal conditions, enough for indefinite operation. However, what truly sets it apart is the auto-rotating, sun-tracking technology. Unlike cameras with fixed panels, the S2's panel physically follows the sun's path, a function that doubles solar charging efficiency and ensures maximum power harvest throughout the day. For backup, the device houses a substantial 7,800mAh internal battery. This combination is designed to sustain the camera through prolonged periods of overcast weather, ensuring continuous recording even in regions that experience weeks with limited direct sunlight.

For starters, that’s convenient because you can mount it high enough to prevent tampering and get a good view of your space, without worrying about how hard it’ll be to run electrical wiring or replace batteries. It also ensures you get consistent, uninterrupted coverage in the long term, especially if you’re away from your property for long stretches. It’s truly a set-it-and-forget-it piece of security equipment.

Cutting-edge motion detection

Autonomous charging isn’t the only unique feature Baseus has implemented with its new camera. Most competitors simply use the existing video sensors (that is, the daylight camera and nighttime infrared sensor) to watch for motion, before feeding that data to a detection algorithm. The Baseus S2 goes one step further by including radar technology, which emits radio waves and tracks what gets reflected back.

This goes beyond basic motion detection. The combination of dual radar and PIR sensing apparently eliminates some 99% of false alarms. The two-level detection also benefits from AI processing that identifies strangers, vehicles, and pets. A standout feature is the "Familiar Face" pre-approval list, which lets me add 10 family members to come and go without triggering a single alert—so I’m not woken up if somebody comes home late, but I still have safety and peace of mind.

What the Baseus S2 doesn’t have

To the relief of many of us, none of these high-end features require any kind of subscription. Everything on the Baseus S2 works out of the box, with no monthly fees, no long-term commitments, and zero requirement to hand over any of your personal data. The powerful AI recognition, unending battery power, and dependable motion detection combine to mean you barely even have to think about maintaining the unit.

To keep everything running smoothly in the long term, the Baseus S2 supports microSD cards up to 512GB (sold separately, of course). In other words, everything is processed and stored inside the device. It doesn’t need a base station or any kind of active monitoring to do its job. And, because of the low-latency, dual-action motion detection, you won’t need to sift through hundreds of hours of meaningless footage to get to the part where something happens. Everything is catalogued clearly and simply through the impressively straightforward, user-friendly app.

All told, the Baseus S2 left me extremely impressed with what smart home security has become. At a current discount price of less than $100, it’s hard to find a better deal — especially considering the complete array of premium features, and the near-complete need for any kind of maintenance in the short or long term.
