Sennheiser has unveiled its latest wired headphone, the HD 550, aiming to serve both audiophiles and gamers who want high-quality sound without breaking the bank. With an open-back design, a lightweight build, and a focus on clarity, the Sennheiser HD 550 looks to be an interesting option for those who want an immersive listening experience—whether for music or gaming.
These headphones also follow in the footsteps of Sennheiser’s HD 505, another open-back model that was well-received for its sound quality and comfort.
At the core of the HD 550 is a custom 38mm transducer, designed to deliver detailed and dynamic audio across a wide frequency range (6Hz to 39.5kHz). This means the headphones are built to pick up everything from deep bass notes to crisp highs, making them suitable for both intricate music tracks and pinpointing in-game sounds.
The open-back design is key to this experience. Instead of trapping sound inside, the HD 550 allows air to move freely through the earcups, creating a more natural and spacious soundstage.
This kind of setup is great for anyone who wants to feel like they're sitting in the middle of a live concert—or, for gamers, right in the middle of the action. The angled transducer placement further enhances this effect, giving a better sense of directionality, which can be useful for competitive gaming.
Sennheiser also highlights that the HD 550 keeps things neutral, without excessive bass or artificial tuning. That’s good news for audiophiles who prefer an accurate representation of their music rather than something that colors the sound.
Wearing headphones for extended periods can sometimes lead to fatigue, but the HD 550 is designed with comfort in mind. Weighing just 237 grams (8.4 oz), the headphones aim to sit comfortably on the head without causing strain.
The headband has a soft-touch texture, and the ventilated metal mesh earcups are built to stay cool over long sessions. Compared to other models in Sennheiser’s 500 series, the HD 550 has a slightly more relaxed clamping force, meaning they should feel less tight on the head.
Like other models in the 500 series, the HD 550 follows a modular design, which allows users to swap out parts like cables and earpads. This is useful for anyone who wants to replace worn-out components rather than buying an entirely new pair of headphones.
Out of the box, the HD 550 comes with a 1.8m (6ft) cable featuring a 3.5mm stereo jack, along with a 6.35mm adapter for compatibility with a variety of devices, including high-end audio gear. Additional cables, including balanced options, are sold separately.
"Audiophiles looking for featherlight headphones with honest voicing and deep bass extension are in for a treat,” said Klaus Hanselmann, Sennheiser Audiophile Product Manager. "While the HD 550’s airy detail is obvious, customers will fall in love with its delightfully polite touch – perfect for listening for hours on end."
Sennheiser positions the HD 550 as a versatile set of headphones meant for both music lovers and gamers. While it doesn’t have a built-in microphone—meaning gamers will need to use an external mic—it offers detailed, lag-free spatial awareness, making it a strong option for those who prioritize audio fidelity over extra gaming features.
The Sennheiser HD 550 is available for pre-order now at Crutchfield, with shipping expected to begin in early April, priced at $299.95.
