Introduction

Cambridge Audio has been doing hi-fi since the late 1960s. Their gear has always carried that “British sound” reputation—warm, musical, yet precise. I’ve used their amps and DACs before, and when I heard they were making a serious push into the wireless earbud game with the Melomania A100, I had to try them.

The earbud market is a warzone. Apple owns the lifestyle crowd, Sony and Bose dominate ANC headlines, and then there’s a tidal wave of generic brands fighting for attention. So how does a hi-fi company like Cambridge break through? By leaning on what they know: sound quality first.

The A100 aren’t just another set of wireless buds with a big brand badge—they’re a statement. With hi-res codecs (LDAC and aptX Lossless), proper Class A/B amplification inside, and an app that actually does something useful, these punch way above their price. And in daily use, they didn’t just impress me—they won me over. Buy them on Amazon!

Setup & App

Getting started with the A100 is refreshingly simple. Open the Melomania Connect app, pair them once, and you’re done. I usually groan when earbuds force me into another app, but this one earns its place. The app lets you tweak a full 7-band EQ, apply Cambridge’s DynamEQ (automatic EQ adjustments at different volumes), switch between presets, and push firmware updates. It’s like Cambridge decided not to make fluff—they made an app worth keeping.

Design & Comfort

Cambridge kept things classy here. The buds are stemmed, but shorter than AirPods, so they don’t feel like little antennae sticking out of your ears. The finish feels premium, and at 4.7 g per bud, they’re light enough to forget about once they’re in.

The included silicone tips (S/M/L) make finding a seal painless. In my ears, they settled in perfectly—secure enough for walking and shrugging without that constant “about to fall out” anxiety AirPods give me. After a minute, the tips seemed to “set” into place, almost molding slightly to my ear canal for a tighter seal. The result? More comfort and better ANC.

The case deserves a shoutout too: slim, pocketable, and actually stays closed. It’s Qi-compatible for wireless charging, so I can drop it on the same pad I use for my phone. Small detail, big convenience.

Sound Quality

Here’s where Cambridge flexes.

  • Default tuning: A warm, bass-forward signature. Bass is a bit boosted—borderline bloated if you’re picky—but still controlled enough to stay musical. Vocals are smooth and full, and treble is rolled off slightly to avoid harshness. The result is a relaxed, fun listen that doesn’t fatigue.
  • EQ & scaling: Fire up the app, and things get serious. These drivers respond beautifully to EQ. You can dial down the bass, open up the top end, and land on a more neutral, hi-fi-like signature. Unlike cheaper buds, EQ changes here don’t break the sound—they refine it.
  • Imaging & stage: Separation is solid, with a stage that feels wider than most $150 buds. Instruments have space, and nothing collapses into a muddy center.

They don’t compete with over-ear headphones, but for true wireless earbuds, Cambridge is delivering musicality first, convenience second—a refreshing reversal of the usual formula.

ANC & Transparency

Cambridge uses Qualcomm Adaptive ANC, and it’s solid for the price. It doesn’t hit Bose or Sony blackout levels, but it’s far from weak. Road noise and HVAC hum drop noticeably, making long listening sessions more peaceful. In my GMC Sierra 2500, they softened the A/T tire roar to something manageable.

Transparency is also “good enough.” You’ll hear conversations and traffic, but it doesn’t sound lifelike. It’s functional, not magical. Buy them on Amazon!

Calls & Controls

With six microphones and Qualcomm cVc ECNS, the A100 hold their own on calls. Voices come through clear on both ends, and background noise gets handled respectably. Touch controls are straightforward and responsive—I had no accidental taps or weird lag, which is more than I can say for some competitors.

Battery Life

This is one of the A100’s biggest wins.

  • ANC Off: 11 hours per charge, 39 total with the case.
  • ANC On: 6.5 hours per charge, 21 total.
  • Fast charging: 10 minutes on USB-C nets ~2 hours with ANC or ~3.2 hours without.

That’s excellent stamina for this class, and with Qi wireless charging, topping off is as easy as setting the case on a pad.

Value

At $149, Cambridge is undercutting AirPods Pro and Sony’s top ANC models while offering higher-end codec support, a proper EQ, and better battery life than many rivals. Add in their hi-fi tuning pedigree, and it feels like they’re giving you a lot for the money.

Final Thoughts

When I first heard Cambridge Audio was making their own set of true wireless earbuds, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. This is a company I’ve always associated with hi-fi gear—big amps, serious DACs, bookshelf speakers that demand a quiet room and a glass of whiskey. Earbuds? That felt almost beneath them. But after living with the Melomania A100, I get it.

These are not just “another AirPods alternative.” They’re the real deal: a pair of buds that actually sound like they were tuned by people who care about music. The A100 aren’t chasing gimmicks or flashy features for the sake of it. They’re chasing the feeling of being pulled into a track, whether that’s a quiet acoustic session or a wall of heavy guitars.

Do they have flaws? Sure. The ANC isn’t going to teleport you into a vacuum chamber, and transparency mode won’t make you feel like you’re hearing with superhuman ears. The default tuning is a little bass-happy, and if you’re someone who hates EQ, you might wish Cambridge had gone for a flatter out-of-the-box sound. But here’s the thing: they make me want to use them every day. And in the crowded earbud market, that’s a bigger win than perfect specs on paper.

At $149, they’re punching way above their weight. You get codec support that rivals audiophile gear, real stamina with battery life that actually lives up to the promise, wireless charging, multipoint, and a fit that doesn’t drive me insane like a lot of earbuds do. Most importantly, you get that Cambridge Audio “house sound”—musical, warm, and refined—in a pocketable daily driver.

If you’ve been stuck waiting for the “next AirPods” or trying to figure out which of the countless earbuds on Amazon aren’t a waste of money, let me save you some time: these are the ones I’d actually buy for myself, keep in my pocket, and not think twice about. Cambridge didn’t just show up to the earbud game—they came ready to play.

And if this is their first attempt? Everyone else in this space should probably start sweating. Buy them on Amazon!
