
We have officially come full circle. For years, audiophiles built massive separates systems with dedicated preamps, giant power amplifiers, and monoblocks sitting next to floorstanding speakers. Then Class-D amplification shrank everything down into tiny desktop boxes.
Now Fosi Audio has somehow brought the monoblock back to the desk. And honestly, this thing is sick.
I'm reviewing the Fosi Audio V3 Mono as a pair with the 48V/10A power supply, and the first thing that made me laugh was the power brick. It is physically bigger and heavier than either amplifier. That pretty much sums up where affordable Class-D audio is right now.

The amplifier itself is tiny. The power supply looks like it belongs to a gaming laptop from another dimension. And yet for a few hundred dollars, you can put together a true pair of balanced monoblocks that would have required far more money and physical space not that long ago.
So yeah, I guess this is finally the excuse we needed to put tower speakers on both sides of the desk.
The V3 Mono follows the same general design language I've liked on other recent Fosi gear: a compact black aluminum chassis, orange accents, and enough weight that the amp doesn't feel like a hollow plastic box.
Each amplifier is tiny, especially once you remember what it actually is. There's no stereo channel hiding inside. One V3 Mono powers one speaker. That means a normal two-channel system requires two amplifiers. And that's kind of the whole appeal.
Instead of stuffing everything into one chassis, you get completely separate amplification for the left and right channels. You can place the amps near each speaker, keep speaker-wire runs short, and build the rest of the system around whatever preamp, DAC, or streamer you want.
This is the ultimate "I want full control over every part of my system" setup without needing an actual equipment rack.
The optional 48V/10A supply deserves its own section because it completely breaks the scale of the system. The V3 Mono itself is tiny. The power supply is not.
The brick is bigger and heavier than one of the amplifiers, which is hilarious the first time you put everything on a desk. But there is a practical reason for it: Fosi designed the 48V/10A supply so one brick can power a pair of V3 Mono amplifiers through a splitter setup. Fosi currently sells the two-amplifier/48V-10A bundle directly.

One important clarification here: the 10A supply doesn't suddenly double the rated output of each amplifier compared with a 48V/5A supply. Fosi has said the TPA3255 is already near its practical power ceiling at 48V, so the larger supply is more about current capacity, headroom, and powering two amplifiers from one supply than producing some gigantic new wattage figure.
That actually makes the 10A version more interesting to me, not less. Instead of two separate power bricks cluttering up the floor or desk, one oversized brick can feed both monoblocks. The irony is that the smallest part of the system is now the actual amplifier.
The V3 Mono is purpose-built as a single-channel power amplifier. That matters. This isn't a stereo amp where you flip a switch and bridge the channels. Each chassis exists solely to drive one speaker.
Fosi builds the V3 Mono around the Texas Instruments TPA3255 Class-D amplifier chip with Post-Filter Feedback, or PFFB. The implementation is intended to reduce the load-dependency that can affect some Class-D designs while improving linearity and frequency response.
Fosi rates a single V3 Mono at 240 watts into 4 ohms with a 48V/5A supply, along with 160 watts into 6 ohms and 120 watts into 8 ohms. That is an absurd amount of rated power from something this physically small.
And independent measurements have been equally interesting. Audio Science Review measured the V3 Mono at more than 100dB SINAD through the balanced input, placing it firmly into excellent-measuring territory for an amplifier this inexpensive.
This is one of the features I care about most. Each V3 Mono includes balanced XLR/¼-inch TRS input alongside RCA. That immediately changes the kind of system you can build around these.
Pair them with a balanced preamp, DAC/preamp, or streamer and suddenly you've got a proper balanced separates chain sitting on a desk. That's ridiculous in the best possible way.
A few years ago, the phrase "balanced monoblock system" usually implied big chassis, big money, and a dedicated listening room. Now you can have two monoblocks sitting beside a monitor.
This is the part buyers need to understand before ordering. The V3 Mono is a power amplifier. There is no front-mounted volume knob and no integrated DAC or streamer. You need something upstream controlling volume.
That can be a traditional analog preamp, a DAC with variable output, or a streamer with preamp functionality. Fosi's own community documentation also emphasizes that the V3 Mono is intended to be used with a preamp rather than as a standalone integrated amplifier.
Personally, I think that's exactly how it should be. The entire appeal of something like the V3 Mono is separates. Choose your streamer. Choose your DAC. Choose your preamp. Choose your power amplifiers. Upgrade any one of them later without replacing everything else.

That's the kind of setup audiophiles have loved forever, except now the power amps are small enough to hold in one hand.
The V3 Mono sounds exactly how I want a modern power amplifier to sound: clean, controlled, quiet, and basically invisible.
There isn't some giant warm tonal signature being imposed on everything. Bass feels tight and controlled, the midrange stays clean, and the top end remains detailed without drawing attention to the amplifier itself. That's particularly nice in a separates system because it lets the rest of your chain determine the character.
Want warmer sound? Use a tube preamp. Want absolute neutrality? Feed the V3 Monos from a clean DAC/preamp. Want to change the sound later? Swap the front end and keep the amps. That's the beauty of having dedicated power amplification.
The V3 Mono gives you the horsepower without demanding that the rest of your system sound like Fosi's idea of what hi-fi should be.
And that might be why I like it so much. You absolutely do not need a pair of monoblocks for desktop speakers. Let's establish that right now. A normal stereo amp will do the job perfectly well.
But that doesn't make this any less fun. If you've got a serious desktop setup, large bookshelf speakers, or even compact towers beside your desk, the V3 Mono lets you build a miniature version of a traditional separates rig without consuming the entire room. And once you start thinking about it that way, the use cases expand quickly.
The V3 Mono pair could also make a surprisingly good foundation for a smaller apartment or bedroom system. You don't need giant components to run a serious pair of passive speakers anymore.
Put a streamer or DAC/preamp on a shelf, hide the giant 48V/10A brick somewhere out of sight, place one V3 Mono near each speaker, and you've got a proper separates system occupying very little physical space.
Is it overkill? Probably. But it's the fun kind of overkill. And because the amps are compact, you can build around much larger speakers than the size of the electronics would suggest.
This is where the whole thing gets ridiculous. Fosi currently lists a pair of V3 Mono amplifiers with a single 48V/10A power supply for $279.99 direct, although pricing and bundles can change. That is substantially less than the roughly $400 ceiling I mentally associate with a "top-end" configuration like this.
For under $300 at current direct pricing, you're getting two separate power amplifiers, balanced inputs, PFFB, enough rated output for serious speakers, and one oversized power supply feeding the pair. Even if that pricing changes later, the basic value proposition is wild.
Traditional monoblocks can cost thousands of dollars per channel. These cost about as much as a decent pair of headphones.

Fosi's current specifications list the V3 Mono at 240 watts into 4 ohms with the 48V/5A supply, with the 48V/10A option intended primarily as a higher-current shared supply for system building.
The Fosi Audio V3 Mono is completely unnecessary for most desktop systems. And I kind of love it for exactly that reason.
We've gone from huge monoblock amplifiers sitting beside floorstanding speakers to tiny Class-D monoblocks sitting beside a computer monitor, while somehow keeping the entire separates philosophy intact. You still choose your preamp. You still choose your DAC. You still get one dedicated amplifier per speaker. The only thing that disappeared is the giant metal chassis and giant price tag.
The 48V/10A power supply being larger and heavier than the actual amplifiers is hilarious, but it also perfectly captures what's happening here: modern Class-D amplification has gotten so compact that the power brick is now the biggest piece of the system.
For a serious desktop rig, bedroom system, apartment setup, or anyone who just wants total control over a small separates system, the V3 Mono pair is ridiculously appealing.
Do you need monoblocks beside your desk? Absolutely not. Should that stop you from putting tower speakers there anyway? Also absolutely not.
