The Fosi Audio SP601 represents a big step for a company best known for compact amps and DACs. This is Fosi Audio’s first serious swing at a passive bookshelf speaker, and right out of the gate, it’s clear they weren’t trying to play it safe. These aren’t tiny desktop speakers pretending to be monitors. They’re real, full-bodied bookshelf speakers that bring legitimate low-end weight and presence, especially for their size.
Let’s start with the obvious: these look great.
The SP601 has a clean, modern design with smooth edges, a minimalist front baffle, and magnetic grilles that keep things visually tidy. On a desk or shelf, they look far more expensive than they are. Build quality is genuinely impressive for the price — solid cabinets, good fit and finish, and no cheap “budget speaker” vibes here. They look laid back, not cheap and ready to roll.
For a first speaker product, Fosi absolutely nailed the industrial design.
That said, they are on the larger side for a bookshelf speaker. On a desktop setup, they work only if you have a big desk, but I did find myself wishing they were just a bit smaller. They’re manageable, but they definitely demand some space. Check them out on Amazon!
Sonically, the SP601 delivers a decent, enjoyable, and well-rounded sound — especially considering this is Fosi’s first attempt.
The standout here is the bass.
These speakers have solid upper-bass and mid-bass presence, giving music real weight and punch. Kick drums, bass guitars, and electronic tracks sound full and engaging, without needing a subwoofer in nearfield or small-room setups. For a bookshelf speaker, the low end feels confident and satisfying.
The midrange is clean and serviceable, and treble is clear without being overly sharp. This isn’t a hyper-analytical or studio-flat speaker — it leans slightly toward a fun, fuller presentation rather than strict neutrality.
Where things really improve is with some room correction or EQ. With even basic room correction applied, the SP601 tightens up noticeably and becomes more balanced, controlled, and refined. If you’re running these through an AVR, DSP, or desktop setup with EQ, they absolutely benefit from it.
On a desktop, these speakers work kinda well given their size. They produce a big, room-filling sound even at close listening distances, and the bass presence helps keep things engaging at lower volumes.
In a small to medium room, they can stand on their own without immediately needing a sub — something many bookshelf speakers in this class can’t claim. Check them out on Amazon!
Here’s where things get a little more complicated.
At around $400, the SP601 starts bumping into some very stiff competition. While these are great speakers for the cost, with strong build quality and enjoyable sound, I do think they’d feel more compelling at a slightly lower price point.
They don’t sound bad at $400 — not at all — but at that number, expectations rise quickly. Drop these closer to the low-to-mid $300 range, and they become an easy recommendation across the board. My 2 cents, wait for a sale.
