KEF, a name that usually pops up when talking about high-end loudspeakers, is doing something new: it just launched its very first soundbar. It’s called the XIO, and it’s a compact but ambitious 5.1.2-channel system built to bring immersive home theater sound into your living room, without needing a full rack of gear. Priced at $2,499.99 in the U.S. (£1,999 in the UK), the XIO is aimed at those who want premium sound and modern features wrapped into a single, sleek package.
The XIO is designed to deliver full surround sound all from one unit. It handles five main audio channels, one subwoofer channel, and two upward-firing height channels, giving you the effect of sound coming from above without installing anything in your ceiling. Behind that performance are 12 Class D amplifiers, powering everything inside.
Out of the box, the XIO supports major 3D audio formats, including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Sony 360 Reality Audio. And to help it adjust to your actual space—because let’s face it, most living rooms aren’t acoustically perfect—KEF built in something called Intelligent Placement Technology.
It scans for nearby objects and furniture, then tweaks the sound to keep it balanced and immersive. So whether it’s wall-mounted or sitting under your TV on a console, the XIO adjusts accordingly.
KEF didn’t start from scratch here. Instead, it borrowed some of its best-known technologies and adapted them for a soundbar. That includes six Uni-Q MX drivers—essentially a compact version of KEF’s well-regarded Uni-Q coaxial driver array. These help spread sound evenly across the room so everyone gets a good experience, not just the person sitting dead center.
For the low end, the XIO packs in four P185 bass drivers arranged in a force-cancelling configuration. This layout reduces unwanted vibrations and keeps the bass clean, even when the volume goes up. Each of these drivers uses KEF’s P-Flex surround design, which gives the cone more freedom to move while maintaining control.
Then there’s a new feature called Velocity Control Technology (VECO). It places a sensor on the bass drivers to monitor cone movement and applies real-time adjustments to reduce distortion and compression. That means the XIO isn’t just loud—it aims to stay precise and clear, especially during bass-heavy scenes or tracks.
The whole system is backed by KEF’s Music Integrity Engine (MIE) for Cinema, a digital signal processing suite that handles everything from multi-channel virtualization to real-time room correction.
KEF has also brought in its W2 Wireless Platform, first introduced in its LS series of speakers. This gives the XIO access to high-resolution streaming services like Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon Music, and Deezer. It supports Tidal Connect and Spotify Connect as well. (Qobuz Connect isn’t available just yet.)
For physical connections, you get HDMI eARC, optical, and an RCA output for wired subwoofers. Prefer wireless? There’s an optional accessory—KEF’s KW2 RX receiver—that lets you connect any KEF subwoofer without running a cable. Bluetooth support is built-in too, for simple phone or tablet streaming.
Design-wise, the XIO keeps things clean. It has a minimalist vertical profile, a brushed aluminum top, and a splash-resistant fabric grille. It’s available in two finishes—Slate Black or Silver Grey—so it should blend in easily with most setups.
Controlling the XIO is straightforward. You can use the top-panel buttons, the included remote, or the KEF Connect app. The app includes both basic and advanced EQ modes, which let you tweak the sound to fit your room or personal taste.
There are also presets like Dialogue Mode (for clearer voices), Music Mode, and Night Mode (which softens loud moments so you don’t wake the whole house).
While KEF has never released a soundbar before, the XIO doesn’t feel like a cautious first attempt. It combines speaker technology from across the company’s product lines into a single, standalone system, aimed at users who want immersive audio in a clean, simplified form factor.
The inclusion of high-end features like spatial audio, real-time bass correction, and auto room calibration suggests KEF is trying to offer a viable alternative to multi-box setups without venturing into exaggerated claims or flashy gimmicks.
The KEF XIO is available now in select markets through KEF’s official website.
